That still looks Awesome Matt! I was out Saturday evening and found about 30 Lobsters and they were all past prime...........was so bummed frown I even set alarms on my phone for next year for a 3 week period telling myself to get my butt in the woods.

Question on Hens.........are they on a certain side of the tree? They don't actually grow on the tree right?

It would be great to see some of you guys cook them up and post pictures with receipts. I'm still kind of hanging with just Morel's because I don't trust my knowledge of the rest out there! eek

Found ischnoderma resinosum this weekend. Michael Kuo's 100 edible mushrooms has been a good guide (so far). The boys and I thought it was pretty tasty. BTW does anyone have a shorter nickname (common name) for this mushroom. I tell people the kind of mushroom we found this weekend and they instantly call me a dork.

They can be on any side of the tree, all the way around it, down the root line, etc... We check the peremiter of all possible trees when we go, in about a 5 foot radius. My best luck has been around clusters, where 2-3 oaks are growing RIGHT niext to each other, or around the obvious giants. 1857 year old oaks. wink

"Benzoin mushroom" or "benzoin bracket". How was it?

It was good, a little chewy (I cut off the outer edges to eat on the larger ones, a little nutty with a medium (not real strong) flavor. I like oysters, morels and hedghogs (my favorite) the most. But if the good lord lets us find "Izzy" then thats what we are going to eat. The boys and I are having fun with it. Catch fish, hunt birds and gather mushrooms.

I've been a little hush-hush recently about my finds...like many of you all, I've been having amazing luck out there this year. My best year ever, by a loooong shot.

And like some of you, I also had one of my best days ever today. Brought home about 125 kings, six hens, a few dozen chants, a few dozen hedgies, and left about that many little kings in the woods, waiting for a return raid. I've never found *anything* like that density of kings before. The photo here is about 1/3 to 1/2 of today's take.

Yeah, I've definitely been holding back. See, most (all?) of y'all on here have adult responsibilities, real jobs, children, spouses, honey-do lists, money, and people who love you. I have none of these things, but I do have time, a trusty Pontiac Grand Prix, and a comfortable pair of sandals.

I figured I'd just make you guys jealous if I came on here every week and said, "Yeah, I spent the last three days driving/paddling around northern Minnesota and found [insert large number] of delicious edibles." smile

Holy carp Stick!!

I've had zero time to shroom the last couple of weeks. I've been too busy preparing for my trip to New Mexico. We'll be there during the rainy season so I'm thinking we have a shot at finding some kings in the mountains down there to go with our elk tenderloins. laugh

Here ya go Leech, freshly picked hen of the woods zaaaa with arugula pesto sauce, some really tasty "black" heirloom cherry tomato, and some pepper rings. I know you would not confuse a hen with anything Leech.....just got to go find one and eat it wink

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
