Boat Carpet replacement

Chris Barlage

Question

Anyone know or used a good place to get the carpet replaced in your boat. I want to have the carpet replaced and the doors replaced as they are getting a little soft. Also, how much should I expect this to cost. I have a 17 ft crestliner sc.

Be interested to see what people suggest. I looked into this a few years ago and best I found seemed to be Anchor Marine in Delano. They were willing to do the work over winter and store my boat there. Carpet estimate for my 1775 Skeeter was north of $2,000, if I remember. I passed due to budget issues.

Have you looked into doing this yourself? I re-carpeted by fathers 1978 Sylvan a couple of years ago. I actually added a casting deck and changed out the seats at the same time. I'm not sure how your boat is set up but it wasn't too hard to do the Sylvan. It would be much cheaper.

There was a guy on c listtt that was advertising he did it.

It is very labor intensive, I've never done it but most guys that do say they'll never do it again once they've finished the task. It's sad but many boats have gone to the boat yard in the sky because of soft floors.

I should have added that when I researched this I also looked into DIY. It's WAY cheaper, but a couple guys I checked with said it takes a lot of time to do it right. (Sounded like removing the old stuff was actually harder than installing new.) I also looked online and read similar reports.

Given my limited skills as a craftsman, I estimated it would take me 40-plus hours and I might not like my own results. I opted to put things off until structural issues force the work. Or until I get a heated garage where I can work on it in the "off-season," those 3 weeks between ice-fishing and open water. grin

Walleyefisher, how long did it take you? Thanks.

I did mine 3 or so years ago, lots of work, side walls and everything. I replaced all the wood which made it easier because getting all of the carpet and glue residue off the old can be a pain in the A. And being one board had a soft spot, I just wanted piece of mind with all new. I'm guessing it was a 25-30 hr job and a few cases, got the marine carpet online for around $250.

Yup, after gathering a few quotes, and 5,000 being the lowest, that is what is going to happen when mine gets to bad. I will just replace a door or 2 if I need to but when it gets to bad it will be time for a new boat. I paid 10 for it and to pay 5 to have the carpet and a few doors replaced is just stupid. One more reason to go new next time around I guess. I never would have guess it to cost so much.

I've recently been looking at redoing my boat also and rough estimates for materials has been any where from $1200-$1600, depending on quality and what you want to do. If you wanted to be inexpensive you could just slap down some new wood and carpet fromm Menrds for $500. This doesn't include labor time and unforseen problems during the rebuild. If you can find someone to do a quality job with quality materials for 2K I'd think that'd be a steal.

Call Scott Crawford in Buffalo. He did my crestliner 1850 sportfish this spring for much less than the $5k you guys are talking. MUCH less. He did a good job on it too. Reinforced some areas that were narrow on the wood by adding aluminum to strengthen things here and there. Rebuilt my consoles. Really nice craftsmanship.

You can find him on linked in or PM me for his contact info. He had an ad in hsolist earlier in the year but he said he was getting so many bookings that he was going to take the ad down since he was filled up. Might not get in until winter.

I should clarify that I'm doing same as Josmn and replacing all the sides and floor boards. I figure if some are bad the others must not be any better. Also replacing steering box because it's showing some wear and some electrical updating too. I only want to do this job once.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
