Wacky Hooks

What brand, style and size hooks do you guys use for wacky rigging? I've been using the VMC weedless wacky hooks this year and I'm not happy with them. I've had several fish come off including a really big one which caused all kind of filth to come out of my mouth. I need a better hook. While were at it, let me know what rods and line work well for this presentation. Thanks.

I've been using the Gamakatsu Wide Gap Finesse Hook Weedless 2/0 or 3/0 for a few years and like them alot. Usually I'm throwing the bait on a 7'0'' Medium/Fast spinning rod with 8lb Flouro. If Im skipping docks or in really thick weeds I'll opt to hook it texas rigged with a Gamakatsu Deep Throat Wide Gap Hook 4/0, and go with a stouter rod and heavier line.

I use a circle hook, most of the time. Not the weed less types, just a traditional hook. I mostly hook through the senko, but sometimes use the rubber bands, when I do I use 2 rubber bands and cross them to make an X, then hook through the X, so my hook is perpendicular to the bait, when I only used 1 band the hook was parallel with the bit and I lost more fish that way. I use a 6 mh spinning with 7 lb flouro. It's not my favorite technique to fish, but no denying it puts fish in the boat.

This is a very good point! I do not use oring's when wacky rigging for this very reason.

I use a 3/0 EWG worm hook. I also use the rubber rings. For a rod I use a 6 1/2' medium spinnig rod with a fast action. For line I use 20lb. hi vis braid with flouro leader. I like the heavier line for fishing in and around docks.

I use these small hooks i think octopus hooks? Yes i have lost a few 5-6 pounders. Yes i use o rings ihave found either way its allthe hook. When using orings i have found its beat tokeep the point facig the front tip of the worm. Either way wackyis a finess rig best keep it on a spinning reel and play the fish not horse them in. Atleast thats what it is for me

sorry for the terrible wording and spellig mytablets off right now

I've become more of a fan of a flick shakey style jighead for wacky rigging. As I usually use the offbrand "Senko" lures and they don't sink like a Yama. So I use a 1/32 oz BPS Wacky Flick Shakey head to wacky fish.

jalberg, I also purchased a pack of weedless wacky VMC hooks this spring. The first and only time I fished with them I watched a 3 lb lmb engulf my senko, I attempted setting the hook, and out came my bait with the weedless guard still in place. I immediately grabbed my pliers/wire cutter and cut off the weed guard on that hook. Haven't tied one on since. Did I over react? Probably... and, in fairness, I'm sure they have a time and a place. That said, I'm glad to see someone else dislikes them, so I don't feel the need to give them a 2nd chance anytime soon!

I use the Cabelas wacky jig heads. They're cheap and work just fine. I don't see the need for a weed guard as I'm usually fishing in thick weeds yet don't get hung up much. I fish it higher in the water column and I'm most often getting bit on the initial fall or in the first couple jerks anyway.

I have tried the owner wacky hooks, they are ok. I prefer a 3/0 or 4/0 kahle hook and use a 7 foot med-lite compre spinning rod and 8lb Invisx fluorocarbon.

Same here with the kahle style hook. Gamakatsu offers one for wacky rigging and I think it's Falcon lures that looks like a kahle hook. Bought some Trokar 1/0 tube hooks on sale and they seem to be working fine also for wacky.
