Buckthorn

Has anyone tried smoking with buckthorn? It is a pretty hard wood that makes berries. There is an ample supply around.

I have wondered this too. I would worry about a bitter flavor, as the berries are really sour and bitter. Never tried it, though.

If I remember right when I'm cutting it, it kinda smells...bad. Or maybe I'm just mad cuz the dam stuff is ripping my clothes and skin at the same time!

I'm in your camp. My body is still healing from morel season. I get terrible swelling from the wounds that I get from buckthorn. I'm curious if there is a toxin that causes the swelling. Because of the reaction I get, I would not use it for smoking.

Yes, there is.

Buckthorn when lit on fire burns very hot. Not sure how that is for a measure of worthiness for smoking wood.

Interesting point about the swelling. I get shredded by the stuff all the time, but apart from the cuts and bleeding, I don't swell up. But if y'all want a few good patches where you could get some for smoking, let me know. I'll show you my secret spots.

This plant is mildly poisonous. Not sure about it's smoking quality, but no one should be eating the stuff. It's commonly mistaken for choke cherry.
