Do these birds sometimes come in a darker shade of blue? Last weekend we had a visitor about that same type but it was a dark blue. The blue was so dark I thought it was black at first but is most definitely a blue. It was about the size of the orioles and goldfinches that have been hanging around.

Anyone know what it might be? Sorry, I wasn't able to get a photo.

In shade or low light, they can look pretty dark.

Indigo Buntings are actually black and only "appear" to be blue. The color comes from light diffraction.

did not spot any blue birds in the yard yet but they are around. we usually see one or 2 but they don't stay here. Thx for that info Dave. very interesting

Other interesting info is Blue Birds are really gray but their feathers only allow the blue light to escape from their feather, hence their color blue.

Blue jays aren't really blue either. Their color is created by a brown pigment in their feathers that reflect the blue color spectrum.
