Wood used for smoking

Recommended Posts

I use mostly Green white oak, Cherry or hickory for smoking. There was a fellow that lives near me that used a lot of dry corn cobs that he soaked before using. Question, I never used corn cobs and was wondering if any of you smokers ever did?

efgh,

I have read that some folks with pellet smokers use corn cob pellets with much success. They are actually sold as horse bedding. The next time I was by an area with the Farm supply that sold them I was going to grab a bag for testing. I think 50lbs is around $5

So to answer your question, no I have not used them but have heard you can and know of others who use corn cob items frequently in their smokes.

Cooks Country had "south dakota cob smoked ribs" you can watch the video here

http://www.cookscountry.com/recipes/7033-south-dakota-corncob-smoked-ribs

but would need to do a trial subscription to read the recipe. Or find it on the internet somewhere. They used fresh sweetcorn cobs, but I bet soaked regular cobs would work too.

I also use apple wood, since I have a bunch of apple trees.

my smoker is 4 years old or so and well well seasoned. While I always put some type of wood fuel in the hopper to make it smoke I wonder from time to time if the seasoned crud in the smoker itself doesn't provide more smoke than a mere small pan of chips?
