ThunderLund78
Went to the Sportshow on Friday and couldn't resist the buying bug. Picked up THE FRYING SAUCERHere's the URL: The Frying Saucer Anyone else have one of these? Already did a trial run in my driveway with my neighbor. Really liking it so far! Did some chicken wings, fried mushrooms, and tater tots. Easy set-up and clean up - not something I will use every week but can't wait to do fish fries up north this year or bring it out for neighborhood gatherings, etc. Curious to hear if anyone else has one and what they like to cook with it when camping, etc. Also picked up some of Chef Craiger's breading, which worked GREAT with the saucer. DonBo
Have one up at the lake and LOVE it! Cook fish in it just about every weekend and it always draws a crowd.
JP Z
I've been tempted to get one of those for frying things.....still haven't pulled the trigger though.
otterman91105
I have one of these up at the lake and one for home they are awesome. Easy to cook on and easy clean up.
ThunderLund78
The only thing I found on my first use was that the food came out a little greasier than the samples they were handing out at the show, but I think it's a learning curve. Because it was the first time using it, I was a little paranoid about overheating the oil. I didn't leave it on high very long and I think the oil may have been a tad cool which allowed it to penetrate the food more. Next time I'm gonna leave it on high, at least for longer than I did. DonBo
You can certainly get the oil too hot. "High" is WAY too high for cooking.
McGurk
In my experience, when I didn't keep the oil hot enough I would get greasy fried food, too. That being said, it is a fine line you need to hold. I like 375 to 400 degrees, so when cold food goes in the temp doesn't drop below 350. 450+ can really burn your food and get dangerous, though. Practice will improve your results, I'm sure.
delcecchi
You can always invest in a thermometer to check the temp of the oil, like the turkey frying folks do. They really get 149 bucks for that thing?
ThunderLund78
Material-wise, it does seem a little steep, I admit. But even after using it once, I can tell that it heats the oil much faster than any deep fryer I've used and for doing it outside (ie tailgating, cabin and camping) the ease of clean-up FAR surpasses a turkey fryer and it's safer. Also keeps the stink out of the house. So I'll happily pay for that convenience.
