Browning Shotgun

Recommended Posts

I got a shotgun last night from my dad who got it from a friend that was getting rid of all there stuff basically. I was excited since I had no idea but i opened the case and the thing is rusted pretty darn good. I am wondering what you guys would suggest to get this thing back in working order as the wood is in great condition it just looks like he forgot about it for many years and never took care of it...

Any help would be great - Ill try to post a few pics tonight

Before you run off and start slapping some sort of chemical coating on the gun could you identify it for us? There should be lots of writing and numbers etc. on the shotgun. You might have a very nice old Browning on your hands, something that could be cleaned and RE-BLUED and used for most of your shooting career.....or even used to obtain a shotgun more suited to your needs.

But wait until you let some of the folks on here help you to identify it.

Patience in all things.......LOL.

Big question I have is how is the bore?

Re-bluing can be tricky as if your left with a lot of pits they will show up even after polishing it, but that depends on just how deep they are.

Oh and Dura-coat will also let those pits/blemishes show through as well, but again there are products from Dura-coat to help hide those and that has to do a lot with prep work.

I would find a Certified Dura-coat finisher and have them give you an idea of cost.

A gunsmith can give you a idea of the coat of bluing too.

I agree with Ufatz on determining the value of the gun first.

I'll also add that in the past, I sent a collectible Browning in for a re-grade due to some surface rust from being stored in hard case for too long. When I say I sent it in, I sent it to Browning for the work. It came back looking just like brand new.

This was around 20 years ago and it cost me about $250, but worth every penny.

I havnt gotten it checked out. I do know its an older browning 12g 2-3/4" with steel shot belgium gun. tried to clean it but just awsnt working with rem oil so I am going to run to sheels one night and pick some gun cleaning products up as rem oil is more of a lubricant. So I will keep messign around with it i dont have any money into it so I dont mind spending some money to clean it up. Looks like a decent gun

If you would simply post the model number and serial number of your gun people here could help you. If indeed it is a "steel shot" shotgun it really is not that old.

But you gotta give the gang more information so they can help you.
