02 grand prix power steering pump 3.8 L

my sons car is leaking power steering fluid. I could not see any leaks from hoses. It only leaks when turned all the way to the left. When you do this it leaks a lot of oil. It is in the back of the motor so it is very hard to see any thing.

Does any body have any experience with changing the pumps?

I would double check that the pump is actually leaking before you replace it. It may be the high pressure hose that goes to the rack and pinion. If you can get it up in the air and look for the leak from underneath would be best. (with out the car running)

Also it may be a help to get a 2" inspection mirror from a craftsman store, use it to look for the leak, if the pump is leaking it would be from the input shaft seal, behind the pulley.

It could be the bellows on the rack as well.

I have one of these. The pressure hose is known for crapping out. I did mine on one of -27 nights this January. It was hard. But doable. Getting the fitting back on the rack is the hardest part. Getting it started took me two hours. I don't know if being warmer would have helped. It is really tight in there. Good luck if you choose to do it yourself.

I had a sun flower heater blowing so I would reach out from under the car and warm my hands up when I needed.

I logged up here for 17 winters and I was the mechanic on the crew. I fixed whatever needed to be fixed in whatever conditions I faced if I wanted to make money.

With that Pontiac I figured it to be a $250-$300 dollar job. The line was $24. I'm still bullheaded enough not to want to pay a $75 hour shop rate.

$75? I would be ecstatic with that. Around here in the south it seems to be north of $100.

Put it up on a lift after work. looks like it's the hose is leaking. He has ran the pump low on oil so he will need to replace that also.

I'm surprised at how many P/S pumps come into the shop with nothing in them, replace the leaky line, fill er up and good to go. But then again I work at a Ford garage and this is a G.M. product.

I'd bet good money that the pump is fine. Don't let a shop soak you for a needless repair.

A coworker is helping me out with it. He buys and repairs grand Prix's and Impala's. He has a good used pump that he is giving me. The pump that is in there is making a lot of noise with oil in it so I think its best to replace it.
