I live in SD. Most likely cant find live suckers. Ive been using a red and white decoy and red eye wiggler spoon with hooks removed. What would you reccommend for how often to jig the decoy and spoon. I have some golf balls half red rigged up also. I guess id like to know some suggestions on how often to jig????

Aqufang,

I give the decoy a pull and let it sit for up to 30 minutes. If no fish react I try working it more often. Couple pulls wait 10 minutes. The fish will let you know what they want. If they rush in and attack the decoy I work it less. I want the pike to come in slow and curious allowing time to take a shot. With the spoon I use a todays tackle mini teaser look online several vendors that sell spearing gear sell them. It is battery operated and slowly rotates the spoon or golf ball or balls. Pike and other fish will come in and stop and stare at the spoon giving ample time to decide if you want to spear or watch or play with the pike. Some days the want decoys. I usually have both down and they do show preference that change day to day. Lately they have been paying more attention to a orange and brass spoon attached to a 5 of diamonds daredevil with a golf ball my brother in law made that one side is tinfoil the other is half green half glow in the dark paint. His daughter gave him a whole 18 count carton of eggs filled with differently painted golf balls for Christmas.I know it sounds goofy but spoons and golf balls work sometimes. I love swimming decoys its just relaxing. You can never have enough

I just saw this one at a local vendor and bought it. Some of the more expensive ones are variable speed but I have never seen one in action. SO I do not know if having variable speed is worth it or not. I use a hub house alot and the mini teaser fits in my pocket or decoy bag easily and I am still on the same D cell battery since December and between my brother in-law and my self its running 3 days a week.

The spinner motor I use i picked up at Wally World in the garden section for $8.

It's been running on the same D cell battery all year.

Got a pic of it so I know what to look for the next time I go there laugh Only ones I see are the ones they had at scheels and I think they wanted like $30+ for them

One member of my family works at Wally World, and told me this is a seasonal item, not in stock right now. Closer to the time when lawn and garden really gets going, they should become available again.

Merk, you never told me that I had one of a kind. The problem that happened is my 2 best decoys have the tail the wrong way, so they get tangled up. cry Can I change the rotation to counter clock ????

You would have to bring it in for a referb.... the newest version has a 3 way switch....

clockwise Off Counterclockwise

or you could just buy 2 more decoys!!! :-)

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
