combo for bucktails

Calcutta TE and a 9' XH Tackle Industries rod, would be my go to set up for all bucktails if I only got one. I throw everything with that set up and a 8' XH Shimano Compre paired with a Revo Toro 61HS. Only baits I don't throw are BIG rubber, like pounders and bigger.

+1 for TI rods, though I would recommend the XXH because, why not? I was, to my own disbelief, able to cast showgirls just fine with it.

If you can handle the TranxHG, that would be my vote for reel as well. A lot easier to reel slower on a HG than to burn on a PG or 400TE

As I stated in the low profile reel discussion though, the Curado is my favorite reel I've used. It just can't burn 10s+ like a Tranx

-1 for TI rods....Never been that impressed with em. I like my St. Croix and my G Loomis rods much better. Definately agree a 9 foot rod would be nice. I suggest a 1 piece rod but thats just me. I do agree with almost any reel listed above. Any Toro or the Tranx or the calcutta's you will be pleased with.

St. Croix 9' big nasty and a tranx pg. not a better combo for throwing bucktails known to man...

I'd go as far as to say there isn't a better muskie combo out there.

Smeese - I don't think you can really compare a TI to the performance of a St Croix (Legend Musky) or G Loomis. But value to performance? There's a reason why so many people recommend TI rods. They have a softer tip than St Croix Premiers and I was nervous about that at first, but after using it quite a bit I think it really helps with figure 8 hooksets and loads fantastic on the cast.

I currently use a TI XXH 9' tele rod with a NaCl 60 5.4 And love it. Power handle makes a hugeeee difference. I can get big blades moving fast and for lighter baits if you just let out more line to help preload the rod you can throw small bucktails easy with a XXH. Can't beat TI for the price, great guy to deal with.

For buck tails but not With #10 blades my combo is 7'6" Shimano. 3/4 - 2 oz. reel Abu Garcia record 60 with power handle. 5.3:1 gears. 80lb power pro. I stay with the shorter rod for ease of netting a fish by my self. With this rod you have a large range of lure size you can use from smaller slop masters to rad dogs and buck tails with up to #8 Colorado blades with out back lashes when casting into the wind.

Thanks for all the info, I think I got it narrowed down a little bit. Now I just have to try to get a deal at the Muskie Expo.

One more question, I see a lot of people going to a 7:1 gear ratio. I know you can really burn bucktails with that but what are the cons? I was thinking of going to a 6.6:1.

Any info on that would be appreciated.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
