JeremyCampbell
It's new.I'm just a little confused about some of the terms used.I guess the only way to really understand is with experience with it on the ice.

mattpaumen
Vexilars are fairly simple to figure out and I don't think it will take you long once you're on the ice! If you have any questions about some of the features, feel free to send me a pm!
pushbutton
Hey Jeremy, if you ever want to borrow a camera your more than welcome. Its not a nice one, but still can help to quicken the learning curve on understanding the capabilities of a flasher....
bturck
I bought the 18 years ago and it will serve you well. Don't over do the sensitivity, use only as much as you need to read the bottom and your lure. Also be sure that you have your transducer at the bottom of the ice or you can pull multiple echoes from the from the sides of the hole. Hope this helps some
tip_upclyma
You are gonna LOVE IT! A lot of talk about best flashers out there, yada yada yada....Vexilar is HANDS DOWN the best IMO, and the FL-18 is still king in my world.
Rick G
Jeremy, maybe we can meet up this or next weekend. I can give you a quick rundown on the vex... otherwise shoot me a pm, I have been a proud Vexilar user since 1995.
fishwater
When using the bottom lock zoom, turn the gain up higher before you put it in zoom mode. Drop it back after the zoom is set - this will help ensure the zoom window locks to a maximum range.

bobbymalone
so now please explain why you would use bottom lock in an ice fishing situation I've used it ice fishing, but pretty rarely, and not sure if it's doing anything.Sometimes my flasher will switch back and forth between two different bottoms... Like if it's on Zoom mode the bottom will be marked at 0 and then just flip to the bottom being a foot or two higher. I can drop my jig into what looks like the bottom on the flasher, but it's not touching. I think it might be an artifact of setting up on a steep slope or over big rocks, but I'm not sure what's going on. Bottom lock seems to improve it. Especially if the flasher is flipping back and forth like crazy.
fishwater
Kapp- I really meant auto zoom. I generically call Vex's zoom methodology bottom lock. It's not adjustable, simply locks to the bottom in both AZ and BL open water mode; cranking the gain is the only means of altering it's implementation. fishwater
If you have your gain high when setting zoom, the zoom bottom typically shows much closer to 6 o'clock on the dial than with your gain set to a minimum. The closer your bottom displays to 6, the more fishable water (range) within the zoom window. Most my experience toying with this has been on fl20 and 22 units, pretty sure it works on the 18 as well.
