looking at f-150 with dual exhaust- best way to get rid of the loud pipes?

Recommended Posts

I am looking at buying a 01 f-150, however one thing I don't like about the truck is the loud tailpipes. What is the best way to ditch the loud pipes? Is there a cheap fix for that? And one other thing, I started the truck a couple times, and when you turn the key in the ignition it doesn't want to turn. You have to wiggle the key a bit to get it to turn to start the truck. Anyone know what the issue would be with that? Thanks for any advice!

Hate to state the obvious, but why not just look at another F-150? It isnt't like there is a shortage of them. A truck that somebody has equippped with excessively loud mufflers etc. might just also be a truck that somebody has pounded pretty hard. And why start right off with an ignition switch problem, which, as I recall from owning one myself was a common problem.

Just a couple thoughts.

Put a set of mufflers on it or put it back to stock. And to say a truck with loud pipes is a truck that has been pounded on is kind of a loud opinion in itself. Yes, maybe if its a teen that is selling it. You can usually tell in the seller of the vehicle. Im older and have true duals because I like the tone and its far from being a truck that gets pounded. Havent heard of the ignition problem, I myself have an 01.

Get an estimate for catalytic converter back exhaust from any repair shop. That will give you a pretty good idea of what it will cost to get it back to o.e. and quiter. I convert them back every once and a while. Most of the time the own is just tired of rattles and broken hangers.

As far as the key sticking, it may be as simple as a worn out ignition lock cylinder.

Coming from a small town where half the graduating class had pipes, I wouldn't consider buying one with it unless you meet the owner and he seems like a guy who takes care of his stuff. I am one of the guys who believes trucks with pipes have a much greater chance of being driven hard, because I witnessed it with almost everyone I "knew"
