Muzzleloader moon phase

Recommended Posts

I've never really paid attention to the moon phase during Muzzleloading season or any season for that matter. Does it really make a difference?

I have property I can hunt but the weekends are already taken so I am forced into the weekdays. I noticed that the moon phase runs the gammit during the season, which phase would you hunt or doesn't it matter?

Thanks,

Mike

I don't pay much attention to moon phases but I do keep an eye on moon overhead/underfoot times. When those line up with prime hunting times I see better than average deer movement. The moon is cool but weather can be the biggest driving force out there, but its not as easy to time with a busy schedule.

Because I am a dork and have an app for that, mostly cause I am a coyote hunter and hunt at night....

Muzzy season opens November 30th which is new moon. It closes December 15th which is the night of the full moon. The nights will get brighter and brighter every day og the season. Deer movements will be getting later and later as the season progresses. My suggestion is to get it done early.

Neighbor guy nailed it. As you approach the full moon, not only during muzzle-loader season, but anytime you are on the front side, or back side of the full moon during any deer season, you'll be seeing the deer move pretty much all night long, and it's pretty quiet during the daylight hours.

I still hunt the moon phases, but I tend to move deeper into heavy cover, back into the forest during daylight hours. Hunting edges and fields around, and during the full moon phase can be frustrating. The deer simply won't be coming out where you expect them, and if your not watching the moon phase you'll be scratching your head as to why you're not seeing any deer.

Moon phase plays a huge role in deer movement.

Talking Muzzy which can be darn cold some years, best muzzy deer movement I've seen was full moon but here's why it was -8 when I got up, -23 wind chill and that made the deer stay out later in the morning to feed, it never broke 0 that day and my dad that night saw quite a few trying to start feeding earlier than usual so localized weather can trump the moon at times, maybe it's overcast the entire day or snowing or bitterly cold, if the weather is on a nice sundown moonrise pattern etc yes I'd say get in someplace deep because they will be quite nocturnal no matter what with the moon making it worse unless you have a pretty quiet place to hunt far off the road(s) with little if any recent pressure. Those spots by December are few and far.
