Best time of day to hunt bear

Recommended Posts

I got a Wisc bear tag this year and we are baiting and seeing bears come in all hours of the day on camera. I assume that this has something to do with the cooler then normal weather the past few weeks. Since I am a newbie with bears, are morning sits as productive as evenings or would you bump bears from the bait site and scare them off? Is sitting during the midday hours productive? Looking for advice from those of you that hunt bears regularly for productive times when you should be out. I have a 2.5 hour drive to get to where I hunt and plan to do some all day sits.

If you have bears all day on camera I would get in just after day light, I find this way alot safer if you can shoot mid-morning and get your bear out long before dark. Please post a follow up about your hunt. Good luck

As the previous poster stated the best time to hunt is from 3pm till dark, and the closer it get to sundown the better your chance at a bigger bear. That being said some bears will throw you for a loop. If your bait pile is getting hit earlier then you need to figure out what time of day you need to be out there. If your bait is getting hit after dark then put less food out or skip a day baiting that spot so your bear is hungry enough to come in a little earlier.

Best advice is don't over bait, as they will move to other food. They can only eat so much of one food and then they have to move to a different type of food to keep their digestion going. I use a lot of scent, grease etc. to keep them coming to my baits and a ice cream pail of solid food. Bears are near by when you bait and hear when you are baiting. I save all my grease at home from everything and toss it a over bait area. If your friends save grease from fryers and etc. for you it works great as it's fresh and has different scents. Afternoon's have always been the best for me, and a lot of them have came in right before dusk. 20 years of bear hunting!
