Ford Explorer door warning light problem

Recommended Posts

My wife's Explorer(2006)passenger side rear door is triggering a warning light that will not turn off. I think it says something like "door isn't shut tight". I greased it up a month ago and it would turn off, now it's back on and I can't seem to fix it. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Dunno if it's a similar switch but the Lincoln Continental my SO used to drive had issues with door switch too. It's been a while, but I sprayed into the switch with WD-40(?) to clean it. Seems to me I had to do it two or three times before it finally stayed off for good...well, for good as it means until her son blew up the engine.

Ok, finally got around to fixing the switch. Replaced it and it still says "right rear door ajar". I replaced the switch on the rear passenger door. What should I try next? To make matters worse I can open the side door now! The power lock unlocks the door, but it won't open. I also couldn't remember where the switch plugged into and had to ask a place where I was getting my oil in my other truck changed. This is why I hate working on vehicles! Help! Thanks.....

On this system, it is a closed circuit with the door closed, so if you unplug the switch, one wire should have a ground, the other wire is the signal wire that comes from the SJB module. If you take a jumper wire and jump the 2 wires together, it should read closed, if you open the door, it will be an open circuit, like unplugging the switch. So you can have a bad ground going to the switch, or a bad wire from the switch, to the SJB module, or another bad switch.

Is the child safety lock engaged? Or i is possible the switch was installed wrong, and the lock is stuck on, it is also possible the latch itself is bad. I think the first step will be to get the door open somehow, and pull the door panel again.

Thanks Scott, any ideas on what I did that I can't get the door to open? What can I do to get it open???

This may sound silly but did you remember to hook up the cables or rods to the latch or exterior handle and interior handle? Some vehicles just have a rod that sits in a hole while others clip in. I don't recall how that particular model is set up. Do you have a picture of the old latch by chance?

Thanks guy's. The rod clips into a plastic clip, I'm pretty sure I clipped it back into the rod. I don't believe I can get at the child safety knob with the door shut. The door lock goes up and down when I hit the switch-if that means anything. If I take the cover off the door latch can I access anything to open the door?

Thanks..... I'll take look at it in the next couple of days...I'm sick or working on it. It took 3 auto parts stores, a dealer and finally, Factory Motor Parts to get the switch and about 3 hours in the heat yesterday working on it, only to fail! I need a break before I wreck something else frown

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
