ground blind saftey caps

Recommended Posts

In the past while using a camo ground blind for deer hunting I've hung a orange vest next to or just above it when I'm in the blind.

Is anyone aware of a 2013 MN regulation that blaze orange is required to be ATTACHED to the blind? I've been told WI has required this for 2013,

I'm not aware of it in the regs, but I've always done the same thing. Only I typically drape a large blaze orange hoodie over the top, so it can be seen from every side.

Not that this would stop many knuckleheads from blazing away at a deer with me and my kids in a blind right behind it. crazy

Anyway, it would probably be a good idea.

I'm on private land and use a couple blaze orange vests around

my ground blind.

Also, what about disabilty permit holders that are allowed to discharge from within a stationary vehicle ?, {off the road of course}.

Coming from Texas....I've seen some rigs a gussied up in complete camo...lol

Hey Truth. Not sure what "constitutes" a ground blind, but I think what we're talking about here is the camo pop-up tent blinds. I'll tell ya' bud, they're a great way to hunt deer, especially with kids, but I do honestly get a little nervous being completely camo'd and concealed, at ground level, with only some tent fabric between me and the neighbor's 30-06!

Hence, the big blaze orange flag on top! eek

I use a leaf cut blind with no top. So my head is sticking out typically. It is a ground blind. If I take a nap or use it during a drive a put orange gloves in the posts for increased visibility.

I hunt mostly private, when I do hunt public I never sit, just walk cattails.

I don't believe it went through to make it a law to have orange on a ground blind, but I do know that there is a push for it. So don't be surprised if some time in the next year or two it is a requirement to have a certain sized orange piece on any ground blind during the firearm seasons.

I always put some type of orange clothing on the top of the blind if I am on public land.

I do not on the private land I hunt, except I have orange paint sprayed on one box blind in the air as some people have the tendency to shoot from the road in my direction. The private land we have typically has no other hunters where I hunt.

I do get worried about using a ground blind on public land or some private land where I know others are hunting.

Orange is GOOD on the ground blind.

I've used my pop-up on some public, but mostly private land, and I always put blaze orange over the top, unless I'm tucked way back in the woods.

Where I hunt it doesn't seem to matter if it's public or private land, if there's a deer in site, and it's within 700 yards of a gun, it's getting shot at. It's sickening.

If I'm not surrounded by heavy trees, I want everyone to know where I am.

I did not see the rule in MN handbooks. In WI it is a rule and I'm not so sure those top caps would be legal. Rule last year stated you had to have a 12x12 inch patch of orange on all 4 sides of the ground blind. Rule seemed pretty particular about all 4 sides.

The caps do not meet the legal requirement in WI. The requirement is very specific.

I had an individual that was set-up within 50yrds of me on public land during rifle season. I didn't notice the blind until 10 AM when I spotted a shiny object, the hunter moved his rifle and rested it threw the window and it caught my eye. Very scary, I got goosebumps from this experience and nothing happend, he had it so concealed that I had to get my binoculars out to make the silloute of the blind out. I wish there would be a law for it although common sense should play a role in ground blind hunting

When rooting thru the WI DNR HSOforum, I came upon this nugget. The blaze safety requirement for gound blinds only covers DNR controlled lands.

"The requirement for blaze orange on blinds applies only to blinds placed on lands under the ownership, management or control of the DNR. However, it does not apply to blinds made solely of dead vegetation found on the property nor does it apply to tree stands or other elevated stands. This rule also generally applies to those private lands leased by the DNR for public hunting, such as Voluntary Public Access properties. This rule does not apply to federal, county or municipal lands open to hunting, or to private lands not leased by the DNR for public hunting."

About 4 years ago I was hunting in my pop-up ground blind one public land. One afternoon I stalked the area and came across a illegal tree stand. Boot tracks in the snow told me it was being used. I got into it to check the view as I knew it was close to me and found the shooting lane was directly at my blind at about 200 yards. I used binoculars to see my blind and I KNEW where it was. I moved my blind and that's when I started hanging and extra orange vest above it.
