Leech vs Mille Lacs

Planning a fishing weekend at the end of September. Would like to chase walleye and bass (small or largemouth depending on the lake). Which lake would you all suggest? Any suggestions on places to stay on a budget? Thanks in advance.

Both are great fisheries IMO. My preference is Vermillion for a couple reasons. One is the smallmouth fishing the other is that regardless of wind there is always many places you can fish with Leech you do not get as many options for tucking into small bays like you do on Vermillion. For size of LM bass the edge goes to leech.

Good Fishing!

I'd say Mille Lacs. I think hands down Mille Lacs takes it for smallies but it also has a very good populaton of largemouth and they're not small. The wind can be an issue but you can find smallies on every side of the lake...just watch the wind. Also Mille Lacs as a lot of good largemouth lakes right next to it.

I guess I'm biased because I've only fished Mille Lacs haha. I've heard nothing but great things about Leech though.

Totally different waters. It all depends what type of fishing you would like to do. If you want to fish rocks with jerkbaits, tubes and topwater for smallies and reeds and docks for largemouth..fish Mille Lacs. If you want to fish in less than 5 feet all the time for bass, and have more bass water than you know what to do with..fish Leech.

I am going to vermillion over labor day weekend for some smallmouth. Hooe its not too busy. What kind of place r u looking at staying at? Both lakes have casinos nearby or r u going to be camping. I am a smallmouth fan so I am also planning on hitting mille lacs in the middle of September.

Ha! I am a big Vermillion fan so I guess my brain had gas. Mille Lacs would be my choice over Leech because of the small mouth but if there is wind you can be really limited on spots to fish.

Good Fishing!

Leech will be an excellent smbass lake w/in five years. The population is blossoming right now. SMbass over five lbs are already being caught and there are fishable schools of smbass if you know where to fish as we speak. In the last two years it has gone from most folks having never caught a smbass in the lake to most having caught sm no matter where they fish. Mark my words - give it two years and you will be surprised; give it five years and you won't believe it - another Mille Lacs in the making...
