Dry fired my bow!?!?

Recommended Posts

I didn't think I'd ever do it but I did dry fire my bow. Talking and shooting, the arrow popped off the rest while I was apparently starting to squeeze and it happened. I have a new bow and the cables and limbs all look fine but my peep sight is now loose. I tried to put it back to where it had been but when I fired a couple of arrows I was about 8 inches right. Also the peep site come loose after I shoot. This is the first bow I have had in 20 years and I just bought it a few months ago. Any suggestions on how to fix it (anything else I should check after dry firing)? Maybe a good shop to bring it to get fixed? Thanks.

I would definitely bring it in to get looked at. You could have bent cams, axles, modules, etc. I would NOT shoot it anymore!! I did this once and ended up with a cracked module (it had plastic mods) that I never would have seen if I hadn't taken it in. My peep went flying also and I still haven't found it.

Take it in.

You could check it over with a cotton ball and rub it all over the bow and especially the limbs to see if there are any splinters.

I had an arrow shatter this past year on release during league.

Had it looked at and some items replaced and they noticed the cam was damaged, not me.

Take it in.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am going to bring it to Whitcombs in Princeton tomorrow evening and have Andy go over it for me and fix my peep too. Man, I feel like an dummy. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I had Andy look my bow over at Whitcombs last night and I dodged a bullet and only had to remount my peep site. I'll do a little less running of my mouth and concentrate on what I'm doing and hopefully I won't do this again. I'll get out and scout my deer hunting land and get some shooting in and it will be archery opener before I know it. Thanks for the advice.

Believe me... You can go into an archery shop for worse reasons than a dry fire. Take me for example, who once managed to back over my almost brand new mathews with a pickup. Now THAT will make you feel extra stupid. Glad to hear all is well!

Self inflicted stupidity is the most painful. I had to sight my bow back in after the peep site went AWOL. I had only done this once before and it took me a while to figure out how to adjust my sights. Logically when I'm shooting right I want to move my pin left or if I'm high move my sights down but you got to chase the arrow someone once told me. It still doesn't seem right to me but my bow is tuned again.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
