Milky Way

Recommended Posts

A few shots from Saturday night and the viewing of the Milky Way. No moon makes for perfect viewing.

This I included because there were a couple of meteors flying through. Unfortunately the forum posts shots at too small of a size to see it. Viewed large it is very cool!

Royce,

You will likely be at the widest end of your lens so f3.5 or so will be just fine. You are not concerned with depth of field, since you are shooting at objects a few million miles away. I like to use a 20 second exposure time. Any longer and you begin to see some movement in the stars so they just are not as sharp as they should be.

ISO I usually start at 1600 to 3200 and go up from there to get the amount of ambient light you want in the shot. These I think are at 3200 ISO. Make sure you manual focus and set your lens to infinity, not all the way over on your focus scale but to the infinity symbol. Auto focus will hunt around and it just is not needed.

So the only adjustment you should need to make while shooting at night is to change your ISO to suit your exposure. The Milky Way is normally at its best when there is no moon to pollute the sky. You will have some moonlight this weekend so you might have more trouble seeing it clearly. Good luck!

Thx Dan! we will be out there for 5 days, I was thinking Tuesday the 8th would be very dark with the new moon. Hopefully it will be clear. smile might have to practice tonight if clear out. Kinda bright around here.
