Fix or Sell as is...?

Recommended Posts

I've got a 2001 F-150 XLT. Extended Cab, 4WD, 5.4L V8 180k miles. It had not moved in over 4 years and the time has come to do something with it. Currently I cannot get the truck started, It wants to start but I believe it is not getting fuel. I would assume the fuel pump is bad or possibly more. What would you guys do? Sink the money into it to fix it up before selling or sell it as is? I need to get at least $1,500 out of it, but Im not sure it will command that much $$ if it's not currently running.

Tow it to a local shop and pay to have a diagnotic done on it. Then you will be able crunch numbers to see if its worth fixing. Should be worth around at least 3k, so if the repairs are under a grand you should get your 1500.

If it has not moved in 4 years, you may have the fuel tank strap recall on it. Maybe the shop would give you a deal on replacing the pump while doing the straps. The gas is probably bad.

PM me the VIN # and I can check for the recall.

That's a thought. I do remember getting that recall a while ago.

Ok, now I think I should try to fix it up lol.

Back in 2008 the vehicle was my everyday truck, I loved it. But it sat outside without moving for 4.5 years blush

I think I need to find a mechanic that can take a peak at it and give me an honest opinion of what Im dealing with. crazy

Craig, you would be much better off fixing it, or atleast finding out what is wrong with it first. At $1500, you could be walking away from a couple grand or more in value, for a couple hundred dollar repair. If you have questions, just ask. Maybe it is something as simple as the inertia switch tripped, since it was towed, or a fuse.

Where in the East metro are you? I am in CG, I may be able to swing by and take a look. I can't do any work do to my back but I can check for the obvious things get you pointed in the right direction. You may also need some brake work if it has sat outside all that time.

used trucks are hard to come buy now days. I am surprised what some of these trucks now days sell for.

Thank You, Cash for Clunkers! It ripples through today, 690,000 vehicles traded in and crushed, most of them still serviceable. Decent, cheap old trucks are still harder to find than they should be. The market will eventually self correct, but it will take years.
