Manure spill in Fillmore County

If you're planning on being in the area, you'll want to avoid Newburg, and Wisel Creek for the forseeable future.

Easy to point fingers, could well have been designed by a professional third party. The lagoon may have been over full with the recent rain and the late spring we have had. The pits are designed to hold the material through the winter, but this winter doesn't seem to want to end. Its a bad deal, but how about holding off judgment till we know if negligence led to the spill. Probably several contributing factors led to this spill, knowledge will be gained, and over time the streams will heal.

Thats almost as bad as all the carp people dump down their drains and that runoff through storm sewers.

And if you are looking for answers of what is wrong etc.... Call your local NRCS. They had to go out and inspect and sign off on the project. You just dont build a manure pit however you would like. Thank your govt cause they said the way it was built was just fine.

I've built a LOT of S$it pits in my lifetime for hog building, all were backfilled. Doesn't look like there was any, or much fill to support these walls.

The only silver lining here is that it happened during a time of the year with low metabolism and high flows. Hopefully there were maximum efforts made towards recovery and mitigation.
