Must be a walleye thing.

No, it's common sense...something this state is seriously lacking.

The fishing season doesn't close in ND and their license year is Apr 1st-Mar 31st which is about the best spot you can pick between hard water and open water "seasons".

Open water and hard warer are pretty distinct seasons and transitioning between the two is a logical time for a license to expire.

Ha grin

Tell that to the guys up on Rainy River right now. Boats launching at Frontier and guys augering holes at Vidas.

Jan 1st is the most logical common sense approach. Well, no actually 1 year from the day you purchase it makes the MOST sense.

I fish every month of the year, but I know I'm not the norm. The average person isn't out in April and it's a logical breaking point. With the new dates, one license doesn't cover the entire trout season. Ridiculous. January first doesn't make any sense to me at all. That date has no relation to fishing seasons whatsoever, it is in the middle of the small game season, which would be a problem for sportmans licenses, and many people have already overextended themselves around the holidays.

In other words it makes sense to ice fish in Feb 2013 with a 2012 license?

People buy licenses every month and day of the year. Who knows, the Bass guys might wait until May, the Muskie guys might wait until June. Heck the guys that only ice fish for Trout might wait until Jan.

How is it NOT common sense that when the calendar year flips to 2013, your 2012 license expires and now you need a new one? Instead we have to always question....is it end of Feb...end of March....wait how many days in Feb this year....my licenses says April though...on and on.

When do the tabs on your car expire? If it's at the end of December then you are 1 in 12. Yes it makes sense to sense to fish in Feb 2013 with a 2012 license. Just because they call it 2012 doesn't mean anything. The dates and seasons it covers are what matters. Every fish that has a closed season is closed at some point in April. That is the logical starting point. In my fishing circle, which is a rather large one, I don't know of a single person who wasn't in agreement to the license date changes that happened a few years ago.

Here's where the current system sucks and is a rip off and may cause people to spend less money-

So you think it's cool to come to this state (or go to WI, IA, whatever) towards the end of the license (season) to buy a year license and it's good for a month or two? Or just do like everyone did that went down to our cabin in IA with me trout fishing in Feb and instead buy a 3 day license for the weekend where as some of them would have rather bought a year license (if they actually got a year out of it) and then probably would have made another trip or two down there on that license. Instead, they'll wait until next year to go again. It certainly isn't the only example of turning money away from a state because of the fact that you don't get your 'value' out of the year license when it's only good for a month or two.

I went to WI in Dec and did the same thing. I wasn't going to buy a $50 annual and have it good for a month or two (and come back and fish a few more times) so I bought a 3 day for the trip knowing I'm not coming back this winter then. Now I may or may not go back this spring/summer next winter. If I could get the full value of said 'annual' license it would make it easier go and spend money there. Just sayin. It might not seem like a big deal but when you travel and buy fishing licenses for 4,5,6 states a year it all adds up.

you guys are all crazy...I'm guessing most everyone one this site visits a bait shop, outdoor store, or gas station on a monthly bases, just pick one up if it expires...it's not like you are driving 100 miles to get a liscenes.

The only thing I disagree with is pick a stupid date, ANY DATE and leave it. I buy a liscense every year, so I could care less what month I buy it in...just leave it the same so I don't forget!

This thread has turned into a perfect example of "you can't please everybody".

I completely agree. That's why you have to pick a date which works the best for the majority of fishermen, and that obvious common denominator is the reason for the burr under DTro's saddle.

Maybe they can bellyache to the DNR and get another exemption for his ilk again.

Dang it....... I done run myself out of popcorn........ laugh

You guys are killing me crazy

Who cares when it expires...... if you want to go fishing, just make sure you have a current licence. Pretty dang simple if you ask me....

Its not like they are hard to come by......

Hell, last April I brought the boat out to get wet and dropped a line. After 30 minutes I realized that my licence was expired. One simple phone call (while sitting in the boat) and like magic I had a renewed licence again grin

Amazing huh????... crazy

I even heard a rumor that you can buy a new one before the old one expires...........

Having 1 set day was the entire point of my argument and if they are going to have 1 set day, then Jan 1 makes perfect common sense to me and that is my opinion. Sorry if people don't agree with that.

Unless of course you want to call it a Walleye/Pike license...

It is however COMICAL that Limit accuses someone else about bellyaching. grin Hey I might bellyache, but at least I got involved with a group that works directly with the MNDNR to have discussions about the things that matter to me. Not just sitting here pecking away.

Time to hit the river, I'm out

The ND system seems to work pretty well. Licenses expire on Mar. 31. New licenses go on sale on Mar 1 and during March you can use either license. There is a whole month to make the transition.

ND has been ahead of MN for years with on-line licenses. They are now talking about letting you have your license on your smartphone.

This thread has turned into a perfect example of "you can't please everybody". No matter how hard you try or what the rules are, someone won't like that it benefits someone else a bit better than it does themselves.

(IN MY OPINION) This statement applies to every thread on this site. (Except photography where only positive responses are offered) and re-afirms the addage: "Opinions are like(!##)holes, everyone has one and the other guys stinks more".
