How does one determine value of used electronics?

Moose-Hunter

Question

Be advised: This is NOT a sale thread. That said...

I'm looking to add SI to the boat and may have to part with a honey of a HB 858c. Two years old and turned on MAYBE a dozen times since new. All the peripheral parts are new. Transducer, GPS puck, mounts... The whole she-bang is mint.

Obviously the more I get for it, the "easier" my upgrade will be. In your opinion, could I expect to see at least 50% of retail for this? Or more? Or less?

Your thoughts?

Dave? You around? Whatcha think?

interesting question, and I'm probably your target auidence:) I've been thinking about upgreading my meager electronics off and on for a few years, and money is one of the main reasons I haven't done it (what a shock!)

BUT, and this of course has nothing to do with you personally, Heck, I don't even know you:) but I'll be very leery about buying used. The warranty with a new unit is huge to me, I've heard way too many horror stories...Sure, I have your word yours works great, but is that enough?? Again, please don't take it personally, just trying to tell you my thinking as a perspective customer.

And....Im not sure wtah you could do to make it a more attractive proposition. Maybe If I were familar with that particular unit and knew just what the $$ savings were. Maybe if I could see it working in your boat... just thinking.

I don't do much with used electronics and I really don't know the market, but if it were mine I think I would start around $600, maybe $550, and wouldn't go below $500. At $600 you're pretty close to the prices of the new 5" screens that lots of guys are buying, so maybe you can find someone who wants a bigger screen for the same price??

A good place to find prices for used electronics are the closed auctions on evilbayy, plus the ads on the biggest bass and walleye forums.

I guess I'm the same way. Personally I'd rather buy new for the warranty. However, if I knew the unit and knew the person selling it, I'd have no problems going that direction.

It's tough to convey trust with a total stranger and even tougher from behind a keyboard. I'm an honest man and would never sell anything I didn't have 100% confidence in. But... How would you know?

No offense taken. grin

Good info! Many thanks!

If it means "giving it away", I'll go with a 5 port hub and run 3 units. Was thinking 998c SI for the helm, but it may end up with a 998C for the imaging and 858 for 2D and mapping, both at the helm. And my third HB, a 958, moved to the bow.

Anyway... I'll be in touch. wink

my personal online shopping opinion is electronics related items depending on age30-50% of retail. i consider my 2 major issues, no return policy and no warranty for this type of transaction so if im gonna pull the trigger i also make sure im getting an excellent deal or steal cause i have no history about said item and have no idea how well product may or may not have been taken care of. i never go above 50% retail value no matter product or age due to no warranty available or return policy.

Thanks for all the info!!

AAR:

It's sold! Or I should say spoken for. I was going to list the package for $600, but offered it to a cash strapped student for $100 less. Kind of a "pay back", "pay it forward" deal. I'll need to wait a week or so to complete the transaction, but what can ya do... such is the life of a student.

I'm happy, he's happy and I get to start shopping.

Dave... Did ya get my email? grin
