How's your Ice fishing been this winter?

Last winter was the least successful I can remember. It really sapped my enthusiasm for ice fishing. This year, however, has been very consistent. I have been able to count on good fishing nearly every time out. My only poor outing this year was my trip to horseshoe to try and get some cats. 4 hours without a legitimate bite.

It's been a fairly good Winter except didn't get into many local early ice eyes like years past.

Did get a nice little bonus fish last week on a small jig with waxie and red magot, a 5.5lb eye! Sure was fun on the ultra light rod/reel.

I started ice fishing mid December after my hand healed enough from 2nd degree burns on my left hand on the 1st of December. Finally able to turn the reel handle, but had to have someone else bait hook and take fish off my hook so I wouldn't get my hand infected!

Fishing has been good. Panfish biting real good! Lot's of fish fry's! Biggest walleye do far 23" and alot of 18"-20"ers. Best crappie fishing yet to come before ice out!

Up to this latest 18" of snow up here I have had the best 2 years of fishing ever including this year. Lack of snow cover has made for late weed growth and aggressive fish easy to find and easy to get to with no snow. Now I am shut down as have no snowmobile and too deep for even 4-wheel drive. Can't wait for the March melt and back at it...I fish for Crappies 95% of the time, occasionally chase eyes with buddies who like those.

January Lake Trout fishing has been some of the best. The largest Lake Trout coming from Crow Lake. We have 12-14 inches of snow with no slush even on the portage lakes. The fishing all fishing had slowed down for the past few weeks. Looking forward to this next week the Lake Trout should be on, they have to be hungry soon.

first 2 times out in Jan were awesome, 3rd time out skunked, went yesterday am with my first "project pastics) run. had very strange experience. was using Lindy plastics with very limited results however whatever was biting was big, had 4 great bites that completey bent over my power noode and ironicaly everyone of em was lost coming up the hole. was using ratsos etc. i have to assume the hooks were too small. then found 43 FOW and a school but zero bites on plastics, changed lure/color more than 10 times and skunked...i think back to minnows, thats how i caught all crappies over 10" b4

Caught a lot of nice lakers in the 27-29 inch class. A few nicer ones in the 30-36 inch class. A lot of nice walleyes till about jan 20th then the bite slowed. Jumbo crappies are heating up in the northland should be a awesome weekend coming up with temps in the 50's.

We Fished Grass Lake in Maplewood State Park, Pelican Rapids, last Wed 4-17-13, myself and to boys and fished in 10, 15 & 20' of water and never got a bite.

We changed baits, colors, lures, etc. fished for 2 /12 hrs. Ice was still over 2 1/2 feet thick. We just want some action for the boys to catch fish, Ideas on a lake to let the boys catch fish?
