Dog got hit hard and heavy by skunk

Recommended Posts

Any suggestions on how to cure the funk? I put 3 can of tomatoe juice on him last night and let it sit and soak. I rinsed him off and washed him with soap this morning. It's better but the dog still stinks. Repeat my treatment of does anyone else have any better suggestions? Please help the **** dog make my eyes water.

There is some stuff called "Skunk Off", it comes in about an 8 oz squeeze bottle and that has worked the best for me. Unfortuately have had to make use of this each of the past 3 years, once on myself. You can get it at a vet or through Foster and Smith. The skunk shampoo's don't seem to work as well. There is also a recipe that uses hydrogen peroxide but I don't have it with me right now. Have also heard that "Summers Eve" will work in a pinch.
Make sure you really work the skunk off in well to contact all the skin and fur. If it got on the collar, throw it away.
Good Luck. Will post the peroxide recipe if I can find it.

Oh, I hate that! My dog did that to me once on a hunting trip. Hope you have an outside kennel!

Dawn dish soap worked good.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Arm and Hammer baking powder works, I believe. Can't hurt to try!

My dog had a lingering smell for 3 months afterwards no matter what I used, so hang in there. He got hit dead center in the face and he was in pain.

Good luck

I was up camping with a freind and both of the labs are running through the woods with us and all of a sudden the dogs are yipping, they come back to us and they got sprayed good both of them. So we were told to try tomatoe juice first, then Vinger, then with normail shampoo and conditioner. It worked great. It even made the dogs coat really nice and shiny! LMAO!

Pick up some hunters soap from your local Gander Mountain or such place. Those soaps are designed to remove scents and they work well. That dark green, almond-smelling hunters shampoo (I forget who made it) worked wonders when my dog mixed with a skunk.

This may sound stupid, but if you can dilute bleach down to a "safe" level, it really works to rid the dog of the smell. Keep away from eyes and mouth though.
Just a thought....if a dog can smell a pheasant/duck from 50 yards, how does that skunk smell to him?
Good Luck

In my gun box, I always carry a few boxes of "Odor Mute" dry enzyme powder. I also leave a few at the cabin and some more at home. It is a dry powder you mix with water. The game farm I use to brush up my dogs is lousy with skunks ( I shot 7 one day ) and I've tried every voodoo/home remedy ever concocted. Odor Mute is the great and very easy and portable. Also "Natures Miracle" (the stuff you use to get rid of dog pee) works well really well to.
