Carpenter
Looking to buy/build a wheel house. To me the issue is that it needs to be able to be pulled quite a ways as it will be used as a camper in western SD during pheasant season. Thinking 8'x16'+V. Would it be best to go tandem? I'm also thinking drop door for a wheeler. Thoughts?I'd rather it not weigh a ton too for ice fishing and hopefully pulling it with a wheeler, so maybe aluminum frame? Thoughts again? This will probably negate the saving weight thoughts, but has anyone ever put a shower (RV style) in a wheel house? Thanks, Carp
Cliff Wagenbach
Alum. frame for sure!I certainly would go with the tandem wheels if you plan to haul toys in it! The tandem wheels will increase your gas consumption some though.Cliff
Mcfin
With that big of a house and that far to go,tandem for sure.
cam7069
8x16 only needs to be a single axle. or you don't have enough weight up front. 18 or 20 would need to be a tandem axle.
FishHawk11
Build! Cheaper and you will get what you want! Granted it will take a little time but it is worth it. I built one last year with a buddy on a Miltona frame and wouldn't do it any different. You can get a heavier axel if you want to haul the wheeler. We built an 8' x 16' with 3' V we are at 3500 lbs which is nice. 10" of ice is all we need.
Carpenter
Tandem or single Fishhawk?
Walleyehooker
Yetti are one of the few with aluminum frames and look pretty nice. You can also buy the shell and finish it yourself.
Pallansch
Bought a frame from Midsota Manufacturing in Avon, about 3 years ago. 7'x14'+5' V radial tires, great paint job, torsion axle, very well build. $2100. Wasn't the cheapest out there but great people and very well built
Lip_Ripper Guy
There's a lot of single axle 8x16s on the road, but a lot of people talk about how hard they are to tow. For that reason, I went with tandem axles, and a 20' built by Ice Assault. It pulls better than my 17' aluminum boat, and 100 times better than my previous single axle fish house (15') in which I was often times limited to 50mph or less if there was any wind. You can do tandem on the 16', but they take up 7' of your 16' on the side. I couldn't make the layout work how I wanted. The Honda 450 pulls this thing with absolutely no problem. Carpenter
Ripper, your Honda pulls the 20'er?!
JakeJ_Mn
I had an 8 x 20 with a single axle. Pulled great. Distribution of weight in the house and proper tongue weight helps. The house traveled close to 4000 miles the last 2 winters with no problems. I now have a 8 x 24 tandem only because I needed more room. Gordie
I would go with a double axle that is a full axle set up and you will want to make sure you have a electric brakes for it as required by law.
FishHawk11
Single, we have pulled it all the way to red with no problems, I also took it to DL for WeFest.
Lip_Ripper Guy
Sure does, with absolutely no problem. I was surprised.
