The $1.44 rod holder mod

After seeing some clever bucket mods I thought I would post this one I came up with. It's versatile and cheap, two of my favorite qualities in a "modification"

note: if you do not already own a bucket, add $2.75 to the total price wink

The two main components are a 3/4" pvc tee ($0.47) and a 1" 45 deg pvc elbow ($0.97)

Next, drill a 1 1/4" hole (or holes) in your trusty bucket, I used a plain old hole saw bit. Insert the tee from inside the bucket (it should fit snugly). I like to have it vertical so that it can hold a pair of needle nose pliers, or even another rod that isn't in use.

Lastly, attach the 1" pvc 45 deg elbow to the outside of the tee. This too will pressure fit snugly enough so that cement is not needed (this is why it's versatile, it can be removed whenever needed). I realize that most rods will fit into a 3/4" pvc pipe, but I like the 1" here so there's no "catch" when removing the rod for a quick hookset.

And there you have it. Except for one (or two in this case) small 1.25" holes near the top, you haven't disabled this bucket in any way, and should you need to throw your flasher, tipups, or the scads of trash others before you left behind into it, simply pull apart the pvc fittings and fill it as usual.

Enjoy!

Just an idea but could a person put a piece of dowel that fits inside the 45 degree elbow on the outside of the bucket. Glue or screw the dowel in the 45 degree elbow and cut flush. Then run a screw from inside the bucket into the dowel of the 45 degree elbow. That way everything on the inside of the bucket is flush. You can still put your minnow bucket or vexilar in the pail without hitting or rubbing on the additional PVC piece inside the bucket.

Looks good. Does your shelter have the capabilities for the length of this? I bought at the big "C" ones that simply screw into the ice at any given angle.

I have an Eskimo QF3, so lots of options for hole layout. I didn't put the holders directly across from each other, more like at 10 and 2 (o'clock) if you're looking down on the bucket. This way I can still sit in between them without feeling like I'm gonna knock them with my knees. Measured total width from rod tip to rod tip, and it was 4.5 ft. That would vary slightly with rod length obviously. Of course, using just one would work in tight quarters.

I like the dowel idea mentioned earlier! Only difference is, it's not quickly removed if you we're stacking buckets or need it to fit into a tight spot.

Thanks for the kudos guys.
