hookncook
On the HSO facebook page, I saw a couple posts of canoes being used to get on thin ice. What crazy technique do you have?
Mnfisher
My son in law and his friend waded out to the ice with hip boots in the late winter but I didn't have any so they tried pulling me in their sled thru the water but I was too heavy and it started to sink so i just gave up. JSK76
My uncle would use a aluminum ladder as a bridge to get to the ice in the spring.
picksbigwagon
While we weren't technically ice fishing, this was one of the dumber things I have done fishing. We were up chasing loopers and the ice had moved in to shore And I really doubt the $2.50 looper bobber was really worth the risk in hindsight
simple1
So, I'm thinking my going out on 3.5 inches of good ice won't make the cut in this thread? So far we have people using ladders, people being pulled in sleds by people wearing hip waders, and people fishing on chunks of ice. hawkeye43
12' long,8" wide boards with a boxs made to put your feet in the middle of the board, slide and shuffle out on an inch or two ice to prime spots, use a dipper to punch holes open and put the boards close enought together to sit on a 5 gal pail. that was along time ago,in high school. This is just plain nuts in my opinion.

Bass Whacker
My grandpa had a canoe with skis on the bottom and they would use push poles to push along the ice then they could just sit in the canoes once they got to thier spot
Lve2fsh
We usually drive down the boat ramp at our favorite spot and most people use snow machines or atv's. There was enough ice to drive on but the water level in the lake was rising so we had 4 to 6 feet of open water so we couldn't get out to the ice. I got into my enclosed trailer with my atv and my partner back us down into the water, I let the ramp door down from inside and just drove out onto the ice. Everyone that was watching the silly-me doing all this lined up to use my trailer for their atv's and a few snow machines. I think we got 10 people out there. Getting off was much easier since the water wasn't all that deep we just drove off into the water and up the ramp. Got a wilcraft now so this shouldn't be a problem now. blackdog1101
Those pictures make me pucker up just sitting here in my family room.I've put on waders and waded out to the ice late in the season, and busted my way through the weak ice on the edge (thigh deep) until I got to strong ice. LunkerCity
My brother and I went out a couple of years ago on Thanksgiving day. There was a around two inches of clear ice. We wore life jackets, he went first with 10ft of rope tied to the otter sled, I was tied to it ten feet behind. After fishing a while it looked like we were sitting on open water as it came up our holes. Scary stuff but the walk in was a bruiser so we fished and hammered on gills. Pooh
I used chest waders once I think it was the first week of April. Needed them to get to the ice
motley man
Used a flat bottom jon boat and put our stuff in it and pushed it across 2" of ice. 3 of us fished but sat in the boat. That was November 1987 before Thanksgiving in metro area. Got some looks from people on shore. Fish are not worth a life to do this today. Pallansch
+1 for the aluminum ladder. Pretty much use it every year. Once it get over 10-12' out i call her quits.
Lip_Ripper Guy
I've told this story on here before. This is one of those things you do when you're young and dumb. About 4-5 years ago I was a part of a 3 man ice fishing operation in late spring that involved chest waders, life jackets and a paddle boat.We pushed the paddle boat to the edge of the ice (about 3' deep), crawled from the back of the boat to the front (to get on solid ice), and then each grabbed hold and walked our way to the spot we wanted to fish. This was mid morning. After about 2 hours of fishing, every step on the ice had water coming up from the honey combing, and a small patch of open water 100 yards away was getting dramatically bigger by the minute. It got to the point that I was too afraid to stand up off my bucket to take a leak because the ice would sag so much.By the time we got off the ice, it had melted out quite a ways out from shore from the morning, so two of us sat in the boat (yes, I was one of them), while the guy who drew the short straw had to get a run to push us into the water.Luckily nobody got wet. It sure was stupid.
