What is the best bird to watch

Giant Midget

That's a great question,I been wondering the same thing recently. Not only because there are so many different species coming through and its interesting but also to know which ones eat baitfish and which kinds eat strictly vegetation. Either way the waterfowl munching only on grass should still be where there are baitfish present, no?

I like watching the Blue Jays pick through the peanuts to find the "right" one. I enjoy the chickadees taking turns, picking up one seed at a time, flying to a perch to open and eat the prize. I like my Bluebirds and Cardinals and all the different woodpeckers.

My favorite, however, is not a backyard bird. I love early spring mornings with these guys-

The bird I have time to spend watching that ignores my presence:

bluebirds in the morning light

a pair of wood ducks

loons with a newly hatched chick

hummingbirds

cardinals in the snow

pileated woodpeckers

orioles

indigo buntings singing in the spring

dickcissels singing in June

flocks of cedar waxwings in the cedars

pelicans flying

eagles catching fish

hooded merganser drakes displaying for the hens

any raptor I can get a good picture of

grosbeaks and towhees singing in the spring

swans with arched necks or gliding in to land

strutting toms in the morning sun

the wonderful variety of warblers

.......

95% of the bird watching I do is in my own back yard, so my reply is geared that direction. My favorites are orioles, cedar waxwings, and pileated woodpeckers. Once, a number of years ago when our slough was flooded, we had a family of wood ducks which was very cool.
