FirstIce
Anyone ever try the Frabil rod hard case? Debating between the otter or the frabil. I did notice the Frabil is about $30 cheaper.
TravP
If room and wait is not an issue, no doubt the otter is the better choice. It's tougher and holds more rods. I sold my Otter case and own the Frabill case myself because it suits my fishing style better.

Was it just simply to big for your fishing style? How many rods will each hold?
fisherman-andy
I never liked the bulkyness and handle of the Otter rod case. I had the Frabill rod safe and it works but is flimsy and you have to fold your rod handles to fit.For budget take a look at the Expedition hard rod case carried Cabelas and Thorne Bros I think. Its more like a gun case.

NKLCOLT1911
My coworker uses a arrow case for all his rods, and he has some high end stuff and trusts it to keep them safe, that's what I'll be switching to this year.

Marcus Taplin
Otter case hands down! Reeds had them for $85 bucks the other day! That is a heck of a deal.
NKLCOLT1911
I can't seem to find the same one he has online right now I'll have to ask him at work tomorrow or Wednesday but I'm pretty sure his is 36" it looks like a mini gun case. FirstIce
That expedition case looks interesting. I didn't see it on the Thorne site though.
picksbigwagon
I use an arrow case as well.....problem is, I bought mine for 18 bucks, you can't find the, now for less than
Mike Stark
the otter case is worth the extra 30 bucks.
Sifty
The otter has been a good rod box for me.So much I'm getting another one for a x-mas present for my son.Sifty
BradHawthorne
Another vote for the Otter case, I've been using them since they came out. Never broke a rod, ever. Yes, they are a bit bigger than the frabill but they hold 40" rods if needed and have metal latches and you don't have to fold the handels down. Look at it this way, in ice fishing some things are just going to be bigger, but if they are make sure they are. 1, indestructible, 2, serve a very, very good purpose, like protecting $600-$800 worth of rods, 3, not some clunky fad you will regret buying. dfeste
Got another Otter guy here. 7 rods that are either DH Customs or Thorne Brothers, worth every penny IMO. Gets pulled across the ice in the bottom of the portable and I never have to worry about any of them.

ski_otter
I liked the looks of the new Striker case from the show last weekend, only holds 5 rods stock, but looks like a couple more tubes could be added pretty easily. Anyone used anything like that before?
blackdog1101
I have the Otter box as well. It's pretty much indestructible. Given the value of the rods inside of it, the cost seems to me to be a good investment. If you had a $750 rifle would you put it in a $29.99 rifle case? Brad B
I know I plan to add atleast one of the new striker cases to my equipment line up, if not two of them sometime this season.
fishwater
Did they have the Striker Transporter bags at the Blaine show? The HSOforum is showing mid December as a backorder date.
MN BassFisher
I was in the same boat last year and I purchased a gun case on a maz on's HSOforum for $25 and it works perfect for 4 rods (I think it's meant for a shotgun that breaks down). It's wayyy less heavy and bulky than the Otter and $50 less (with that being said the Otter is longer and can probably fit 6-8 rods). The longest rod I have in my case is 28" and it has plenty of room.
jbird68
Plano, IL is about 1 1/2 hours from me. They have an outlet store and can usually pick one up for cheap. But unless I am buying more than one item it's not worth my gas to go there. If you go there look around. The retail stuff is in the center racks and the outlet stuff is on the outer racks. Sometimes they have the same things in both locations. The outlet stuff is cheaper. Just look around first before you buy.
FirstIce
The problem is a lot of the cases I'm finding wont fit rods up to 36" long except for the two I mentioned. The striker one will but I'm a little skeptical of buying a soft case when I might have to make a 5 mile trek across the lake with a portable.
