fishnowworknever
I was fishing with a buddy one day on a local metro lake, when this guy came floating up the hole, alive. Not really much of a story I guess...but weird!
magnum mike
I'm sure everyone has seen a steady increase in bald eagles over the last few years. We have a spot in Canada where we have been seeing eagles every year and they seem to be getting used to people. We can now feed them with perch. Anytime they are hovering over us, we can throw a perch on the ice and they will come & get it. It really gets interesting when there are a few in the area. Perch are great table fare but we spare a few for the airshow.
dfv87
Snapped a cable (hitch lifting one) on my Wheelhouse on Millelacs when it was -20 and the wind made it worse. Anyway after about 20 mins of freezing my butt off, some guys poured themselves out of their house and ran over to my aid... They said "You ever own a teeter totter?" and proceeded to jump on the back of my fishhouse bumper, as the fishouse leveled they yelled "Put the #$^#&^#$&^ pin in already, it is cold out here!" Eleasped time was about 35 seconds... They then ran back to their house leaving me there looking dumbfounded. I stopped by to thank them and they said they had been laughing at me for 20 mins and felt guilty... Anyway I left what refreshments I had left and made it home just as I thawed out (2hours later). Fishin4fun_MN
About 4yrs ago, we started having a local fishing tournament and dubbed the day Winterfest. The day was warm and as I recall the bite just wasn't there. At the end of the tourney, everyone was talking about how the bite had been really good prior to the tournament. For anglers like me, this was my first tournament and I was really disappointed. I had my fish finder in and my camera, I had one small blip on the screen and well I didn't even get a bite. The best I had was a wet, rainy view out of my portable. Yes, these are frozen rain drops on my window. Yes, these are frozen rain drops on my window. This is the only tournament I have participated in to date where we had rain and it wasn't the MN Walleye opener, lol.
hunt3r
The best ice fishing story for every year. FIRST ICE!!! You get that anxious feeling taken care of once you take that first step on the ice with your gear. You get to tell story's about being the first ones out there and not being able to crowd around the same hole with out it cracking or feeling un-safe. And if all goes well you get a meal of some fresh fish at the end of the night

R. Miller
It was so fun having a new fishing buddy last year, my 1 1/2 year old son Cole. The mild winter wasn't the best for making ice, but on the warmer days I certainly felt comfortable enough bundling him up for a few hours at a time chasing bluegills and watching tip ups. The first few outings he was OK just watching daddy and eating snacks. By the third trip out, everything changed. Cole begged and begged for daddy to give him his own "rod." It was actually quite comical. He was probably only 18 months old at the time. Anyway, after I got myself set up I rigged up a panfish rod for him. I remember giving him the combo and just hoping he wouldn't drop it down the hole...no more than a minute after Cole had the rod I noticed a nice mark on the flasher...the bobber disapeared and I tried setting the hook for him. I got a good hook set on the pike but Cole started getting upset that I took his rod...and here I am trying to explain to my 18 month old that he's got a nice pike hooked...I compromised and handed him back the rod and reel while I hand lined it and he reeled...it must have been quite a show! Later that day he actually reeled in his first bluegill! Needless to say I'm thrilled to have a new ice fishing buddy and we both can't wait to hit the ice this season... c0untryf1sh3r
@jhall555- what in he!! is that thing?? Sorry if its kinda long but its the honest to God truth. A couple years ago my little brother, who was about 12 or 13 at the time, and I were meeting a buddy of mine at his permy on a local lake with a decent northern population. We got there about an hour and a half before he did and we proceeded to open the holes back up and crank on the heat. We had been setup for about 45 minutes or so, with not even a nibble, when I stepped out for a smoke. I finish my smoke and just as I'm stepping back in I turn my head just in time to see my brothers rod go flying down the hole!! He's now freaking out that he lost his only ice rod but I tell him he can use one of mine and he calms down. We keep fishing and catch a few eater fish which improves my brothers mood a bit. About a half hour after he loses his rod my bobber goes down and up comes a good size northern. I see another jig in its mouth that looks familiar but think nothing of it until I look again and see the line still attached to it. Light bulb . I throw the fish outside and start pulling in the line which is getting heavier. About 15 feet later up comes my brothers rod, the look on his face was priceless. Confused, shocked, excited all rolled into one. The little sh!t even tried to con me into letting him keep the rod I gave him to use so he can have a "backup" if it ever happens again. I wasnt about to deny the kid the tools to a true Minnesota childhood so I let him keep it.
silverbulletguy
On LOW a couple years ago listening to music on my phone which is hooked up to a set of portable speakers and sitting on the minnow bucket(cooler) in the very middle of the house so it doesn't get kicked into a hole. Sounds good right? Until one of the guys needs a minnow. He proceeds to pick up my phone and speakers in one hand and open the cooler with the other to grab a minnow. Somehow he drops my phone (but not the speakers) into the bucket. For some reason he decides the best option is to use his free hand to slosh around and try and grab my phone instead of lifting his hand that is still holding the speakers. Needless to say the phone was shot. It did however keep playing music until the battery was completely dead. Took it apart and was able to charge it again but the display never came on and the buttons didn't work at all. I think the most annoying part was it was my b-day weekend and I kept getting text messages and Facebook posts from friends/family and all i could do was listen to the alert tones. Headed home on Sunday and wentstraight to the phone store. Ended up not getting a phone until Wednesday. That seemed like an eternity for someone who uses a phone all day for work. jbird68
I don't really have a story. I posted looking for local fishermen. I received a few phone calls from other members. I met up with one and fished for a day. I then received a call from another member who owned a private pond by the interstate. He said since I was a member, I could fish his pond anytime I wanted to. The first time I ice fished the pond I caught 2 channel cats, 3 large mouth, a bunch of bluegill and a bunch of crappie. I still fish the pond and always try to stop and say hi to the owner whenever I get a chance and he is home. That was the best fishing day I've had on that pond in the 4 years I've had access. I always have nice sunny days when I go there.

mrpike1973
about 3 years ago a neighbor liked spear fishing. he was older and i told him i could help him get his small fish house on the lake. i had never speared before but did some tip up fishing. we got his house off of his trailer and i started to drill a hole not realizing i needed a bigger hole. so he told me how to do it and i did just that made a spear hole pushed the house over it. he put a decoy down showed me what you did about 10 minutes later a pike comes in eyes the decoy. i thought i was going to have a heart attack. he threw the spear and got him from that day on i have been addicted to spearing and ice fishing. thanks to a older man who showed me the ropes he's getting up in years but every year i put his house out with me in tow i'm thankful for that great day

walleyewess
My friend has a pretty nice perminate fish house. A couple of years ago we pland on sleeping in the fish house over night. So we get out there set up get the house and started fishing. At about 9:30 my friend gets a text message. As he reached for the phone it viberated off the edge of the table and bounced off the floor and fell down the hole. We were set up in 30 feet of water and we could see it lighting up at the bottom of the lake. I had a picture of the phone on the aqua view but that phone is no longer working or I would post it. His parents were not very happy he did not get another phone till june because the insurance did not cover this type of accidents. But the next day we did get into some awsome crappies action. (go figure)
Fishdeer
I had taken my nephew on his very first ice fishing contest about 10 yrs ago or so, got him all set up and he ended up catching this northern which he wound up taking second place and winning the portable fish house that he is standing in front of. I will never forget, while he was trying to land the fish i was there to coach him in the process. After the fish was out of the hole and in his hands we were both excited and i told him to run the fish up to be weighed. Well he did just that, ran the whole way and even took a couple stumbles but never dropped the fish. Till this day he is still hooked on fishing and has become my best hunting/fishing buddy. pikemaster1
the first time i went on ice last year i was on lake odowd. i was excited to use the new to me FL 8 i started dilling holes. i found some fish and set up the eskimo quick fish 4. about a 1/2 hour later a huge bullhead came up my hole and started eyeing my transducer then he swam off. 10 miniutes later he was back was looking at the ducer again but this time he took a bite i guess he did not like the taste because i never saw him again. shamrock7
Not a story, more of a philosophical question.....which makes it into the ice hole faster? A cell phone or a Gerber/Leatherman multi-tool? For me, they both go the same speed, slow motion, but they always get there.
