Questions for Ford Flex divers

Recommended Posts

There is interest by a member of our clan in buying a Ford Flex. They seem to be common in other areas of the US but you can't even find them at dealers in MN or ND. What's with that? And do you owners have any reccomendations?

I drive 1 everyday for work. They are nice, have plenty of room and the mpg for the city driving I do is 21 highway 30. The ride very good also.

Wow, I was surprised to see that you get the mileage you did with it. I went and checked what Ford says these things get, and they say 25 hwy (like 17 city), or 23 with the ecoboost engine. I went to fuelly.com and checked what other folks get, and they are averaging less than 18 mpg with them. Edmunds reviews say folks are getting like 21 in mixed driving, 19 in the city, etc.

I've never had a vehicle where I could get a full 20% to 30% more than the EPA stated mileage. What speeds are you travelling at with yours?

I bought a flex about new Flex a month ago. I think it rides like a Cadillac but I drive a truck. I've got the Flex Limited which has the 3.5 turbo ecoboost man this thing goes plenty of power. My wife's been getting 18 city 24-25 freeway.

Fishing Tech, are you using the onboard fuel mileage calculator? If so, don't trust those numbers for a second. Check mileage at the fuel pump, that is the only way to get an acurate number. I calculate every tank of gas that goes in my truck and try to get my wife to cooperate with her car.

A good example for not trusting the fuel mileage calculator would be a trip to Wisconsin Dells last summer. Running on the freeway the instant calculator was showing 27-29 mpg on her HHR. When I calculated the actual number after filling up, we had 35.6ish. I had also reset the average mpg on the dash readout and at the same time filling up it said 29.2.

My 2.2 S10 is running about 22.4 mpg now with the colder weather, summer it is around 25-26.

And to the original question on the Ford Flex, one of my buddies has one and likes it a lot. I think it would be a great ride. It would pull my boat with ease and likely be right in the same mpg range as my truck. If I could afford one, it would be on my short list.

I have been a ford tech for 28 years and know how to calculate the mpg's. I reset the trip meter and the fuel average every fill up and compare. they end up within 1.3mpg of each other when I soley drive it and fill it. I have been shuttle driving due to a back injury and had surgery yesturday.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
