warm hat?

Recommended Posts

What kind of warm hat do you wear while on stand? I am not real happy with the one I usually wear, which is a fleece type with wind block and thinsulate in it. If you have found something that really works well I would like to hear about it.

I wear a bomber hat--mine doesn't have real fur like this one though

Only problem I noticed in past years is when you have the ear flaps down to keep your face/ears warm it can interfere with hearing. Actually it looks like this brand is on sale at Cabelas right now, they normally run $40-$50. Good deal.

I am trying electronic ear muff hearing protection this year (Peltor TacSport) after I started suffering from tinnitus, I read they keep your ears warm, so I will probably just get a cheap blaze orange stocking cap to wear over it. The electronic muffs have little microphones almost like hearing aids to help you hear noise in the brush, etc. so even though your ears are covered you can still hear well.

Great minds think alike :P

Back in high school I used to work on a ski hill. I had a cheap thin stocking cap and always froze my silly-me off, and decided after a few months that I could splurge and treat myself to a nice hat... Went down to Fleet Farm and paid $10 or whatever for a Carhartt stocking cap. I thought to myself "now THIS is a nice and warm hat!" It served me well for the next 2 or 3 years that I worked at the ski hill, but I ended up loaning it to a friend and it never found its way back into my possession. (While the Carhartt cap was the best stocking cap I've worn, it doesn't hold a candle to the bomber hat.)

A couple years later I was with a buddy who was buying a sweatshirt or fall jacket or something, and I saw a bomber hat on the rack and thought it looked ridiculous. Decided to try it on for fun and I was shocked at how comfortable and warm it was. The $40 price tag was kind of a turn off, but I figured I could always return it if it was not satisfactory. Ever since then I have been sold on bomber hats, especially for winters in MN / WI.

I used to cheap out on clothing since I never had any money, but now that I've got some extra spending money, I make sure to buy quality (usually wool) clothing so that I'm actually comfortable when I am outside. I used to just "deal" with having frozen hands, feet, to the point where it would actually get hard for me to speak because my core body temp was low and my tongue couldn't move very well... I guess that's what happens when you're a cheapskate in high school and don't know any better.

Now that I'm just a little bit older and wiser, I've learned to cut my spending in other areas to have a little extra cash to spend on gear. No regrets in that realm. It's either lighter (weight wise), keeps out more moisture, doesn't lock in stink (wool long undies will not smell if you wear them for like 2 weeks straight... compared to UnderArmour cold gear that will smell like a hockey locker room after wearing it for 4 hours), blocks more wind, or, in the case of hunting, doesn't make as much noise (I used to wear jackets that would go "whoosh" whenever I moved). Always pays off.

I've also learned it pays off to spend money on niche gear like a rain coat and pants.. Used to go camping with cheap throwaway ponchos, but a few years ago I spent $100 on rain coat and rain pants and was absolutely blown away. I could be out in the rain but not be miserable!

I have a bomber style hat but do think that it interferes with hearing. Especially when the flaps are down and I turn my head...I can hear the flaps of the hat scraping on the collar of my jacket. Bugs the snot out of me!

What I have switched to and really like is a fleece balaclava. Keeps me nice and warm and I really like it because it keeps any wind off your neck. When I wear just a hat, I sometimes get a chill if it's windy. That small bare area between the collar of your jacket and your hat is unprotected. It's real easy to get chilled even when your all bundled up, if your sitting on stand motionless for hours.

Balaclava, hooded sweat shirt, & a stocking cap. I used to wear a hat with ear flaps, but most of the time that got too hot if I got down & did any walking. If it's really cold I'll use that. I have a bomber hat I've used for duck hunting & ice fishing.
