Chevy Traverse - Can they tow?

Recommended Posts

My wife and I are in the market for new mid-size SUV to replace our aging trailblazer. We have two kids and like the 5 star crash rating on the Chev. Traverse, They're a nice looking vehicle as well. Haven't talked to a dealer yet but does anyone know if they have towing capacity? Every on-line picture doesn't appear to show a tow assembly--or even a place a receiver would go. The most I'd tow would be a my small fishing boat or a light trailer and it would seldom be for long distances. The engine is smaller than my TB with a 3.6 Does anyone know if it's an option with these or are they're just too underpowered?

I think it is 5200 pounds. Normal for a vehicle like that. 281hp is more than your trailblazer and i assume the weight difference is not a huge difference. the 3.6 will just rev a little more for the same power i would assume. I think its a DI version but i don't know.. I would buy a pilot or the new pathfinder instead. The pathy is going to have some sweet capabilities for a crossover (adjustable AWD a CVT and decent towing and power with good MPG) and the pilot has a standard towing package and a pretty solidly build engine. less power but probably just as durable if not more.

Bottom line is the traverse is good for what it is. its not a pick up but it doesn't claim to be one either. The competition is just as good. Yet, the 2013 traverse looks sweet.

The pilot's tow rating is 4500 regardless of weight. it explains all of it in the owners manual, its 3500 once you have 5or 6 passengers. Honda calculates it in a simpler way.

I don't think I would tow anything if I had a cvt transmission, especially a Nissan!

I concur, I just sent another one to the dealer for a replacement. Luckily for my neighbor they covered it as it was just about to go out of warranty.

I have a 2011 GMC acadia fwd I have pulled my lund 1600 pro sport with it and it did just fine. I don't drive it much (wifes hot rod) put the little I drive it I like it. It could be better on mpg. We got the fwd for the better mpg she averages 19 to 20 every day driving. She drives 30 miles to work that would be all highway miles. WE took it on a trip to Colorado this summer and averaged 21 mpg. the kids love the seating and it is very comfortable to drive.

Traverse will tow your boat just fine. If you do get one make sure to get the factory tow package as that's the only way to get the 5200# rating. It has tranny cooler and larger capacity radiator or something like that. We have a 2011 with the tow package. And yes, it is a DI motor.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
