Ryan_V
Took my shorthair out for a test run in the field tuesday evening. Now yesterday (weds) she was limping on a front foot. Today she won't put weight on it. I looked at it and see a growth/swelling between two toes. I'm assuming she stepped on something and its now infected. Dripping her off at the vet tomorrow. In the mean time, can I give her advil or something for pain? Its obvious it hurts her. Thanks for any advice.By the way, she did an outstanding job in the field, I can't wait for hunting to start! pushbutton
No go on ibuprofen or tylenol. Think aspirin is the only "safe" over the counter pain reliever ...maybe 100 mg...not a vet and don't quote me....vets can hook you up with rimadyl if needed. Might be worth going in for something small like this and saving some for future use.
nofishfisherman
Absolutely not on ibuprofen. Its highly toxic to dogs. Not sure on what a lethal dose is but I don't believe its very much.I personally wouldn't give any over the counter drugs to the dog without talking to a vet first. There are a few that are ok but there are also a lot that are lethal. Since you are going in tomorrow I'd just hold off on the pain meds until you talk to the vet. brittman
Buffered childrens aspirin works fine. Pet stores sell flavored, buffered aspirin if you want to go that route.Watch for infection. I have had dogs get sticks, fox glove seeds imbedded in their paws and they can become infected. Antibiotics from the vet clears up the problem quickly. Ryan_V
Thanks for the info guys. She actually started to come out of it, got her to the vet and they got her some antibiotics, and something for swelling. Normally I would have let it go because I think she licked out whatever was in there, but this close to hunting opener I wanted to make sure she was good to go for next weekend! TylerS
Keep a close eye on her. If that's a grassy awn, it could still be in her body. Dangerous stuff.
GSP4ME
I keep a bottle of baby asprin in my do bag and just give one when needed. I have two that are sore right now from the grouse woods. The 5 year old doesnt want to put any weight on the right front foot. Just to much for them.
