Can't say as I've had one go bad before, but I have a pretty good one (built in) thats only about 2 years old and has gone dark on me...Obviously I've checked the breaker/outlet and it's getting juice, just quit completly out of the blue.

Better to just call it a day and replace it?

Probably can be fixed, but probably won't know if it's worth it or not until you'd get a repair estimate. Probably cost $75 just to have it checked out.

If you open it up be darn careful. There's lethal level of high voltage/current in there and the capacitors can hold a charge for a long time.

Also if you have the thing torn apart and you manage to get it to run you can mess yourself up pretty bad from raw microwave hitting you with the door open. We had a similar problem except ours was the control board kept going bad. Board was 150 bucks and the microwave new was 350. Was not worth fixing it. The electronics are just toys and are not built well. Funny I bought one used online for 50 bucks and it has to be 20 years old and wont die.

What timing I have one of them fancy over the stove/fan/light microwaves that over heats ( I am guessing) after about two minutes and resets itself. Went out and bought a counter top 1000 watt replacement for a fraction of the cost. Will leave the fancy microwave where it sits, can still use the fan and light. Guess I am a two microwave kitchen. Didn't even think about playing inside of it, maybe a bad fan but don't need to get zapped either!

I don't plan on doing anything with it myself...just figuring the cost of getting it looked at vs buying new. I agree, seems like most of the stuff built nowadays is meant to be kind of disposable. It's actually older than I thought (so says my wife) so I think it's just getting replaced.

At two years, it's worth having it looked at. Could be something as simple as a fuse. Boards and mag tubes can get pricey. Life expectancy on microwaves are from 3 to 11 years with the average being 5-6 years. Not advisable to tear into it yourself, it's dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. $75.00 estimate might be high. They charge $24.00 or so at the store I work at.

Mine stopped working last week. I opened it up saw the fuse was bad and did not touch anything else but the fuse. Checke dto see what fuse to replace stopped at a hardware store and it cost $5 for me to fix mine. It is easy to check the fuse and saved me buying a new one.
