How many lures?

Let me start by saying I have had the muskie sickness for a few years...and the answer to your question is about 150 lures. Yes, a person does not need that many...and that is something I have heard my wife say a thousand times. To be honest, I have about 12 that I use most of the time. A handful of bucktails, jerk/glide baits, cranks and plastics is all a person really needs...Just my two cents.

Well I also definitly have the sickness!! Last count was over 300 last summer and I probably got another 50 over the winter and plan on buying more! Most have only been thrown a few times. I have a box with my favorite 40 in it, that I just keep rotating. Most of the lures are jerks and cranks, a few bucktails, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics. Even worse I've built a workshop for making my own lures. I don't think I can be cured!

Hiya,
Well, it's a sick deal let me tell ya...

The bait wall in my basement is 7'x11', and it's full floor to ceiling. Plus I've got some hanging from the floor joists too. I started acquiring muskie lures when I was 13, so I've had some time to gather a few. I've never counted (kind of scared to) but it has to be near 4 digits or better. Like I said, sick deal.

I did notice something a while back though. It's not so much that I have lots of *different* baits, it's that I have *lots* of the baits I use most often. I like two different kinds of bucktails an awful lot, one made to my specifications, and one designed by my Esox Angler cohort Jack Burns. They're custom tied, and I buy them a couple dozen at a time in my pet colors every so often, cuz fish chew 'em up eventually, and I'd rather make one big order than a bunch of little ones. So I have all kinds of those around... For the baits I rely on, a dozen or so (sometimes 2 dozen, or more) in various colors isn't unusual. Plus some baits I really like go out of production, so I hoard them, because a lot of muskie baits get destroyed or wear out eventually. It all adds up.

Still, when I was down in my tackle room this winter it started to sink in how many of the baits I have may never see the light of day again because I just won't ever use 'em. Some of them were flops for one reason or another, others have been replaced by baits that do the same thing but hook better, are more durable, or whatever... Between the lures, rods I never use anymore, and all the other crud I have laying around, I really should clean things out and have a doozy of a garage sale grin.gif

When I'm actually on the water though, I don't carry all that many baits. 25 maybe? I could probably get by with less than half that. One some waters, I only bring 2 or 3. I fished for a week on Lake of the Woods last summer with one Plano Stowaway with half a dozen baits.

Cheers,
RK

RK,

Let me know when you have that garage Sale
:-).

I started muskie fishing a couple of years ago with my 3 boys. To be honest, they buy most of the lures these days with money they get working here and there although when we started I bought about 10 that we used the first year. I would say we know have close to 100 or so, never counted.

After 35 years of muskie fishing I have amassed about 500 baits, of one kind or the another. Like RK, many of them will never see the water again. smile.gif

I have a bucket with about 20 baits in it that I use all the time. I change it over the course of the season depending on weather and seasonal changes however it's still only about 20 baits.

I actually just counted mine this morning for the first time. I bought a new Lakewood box because I've got too many baits for my old box.

Seeing the number of baits that some have, now I don't feel nearly as bad. I've been fishing muskies for about 15 years and I'm at 92 baits. I've had a lot of will power the last 5 years and have bought only a few baits per year.

But of my 92 baits, I've put 56 in my Lakewood box that I might use. The remaining baits I have are going to stay in the basement because I'll likely never use them again. And of my 56 baits in my box, I probably only use about 20 of those on a regular basis. And a typical day on the water will see me only using 6 to 8 baits, sometimes only a couple.

I've got about 270 that I've been collecting since I was 3, most from family members and ones that I've bought and found on the lake!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
