Bear hunting in Carlos Avery???

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I didn't draw a tag for zone 26, and if I can't get a surplus permit for up there I would still like to get out bear hunting.

Any idea of what the bear numbers and hunting pressure is like around Stacy???? I've lived over here a year now, and have yet to see one out running around.....When I lived in Wisconsin I would see a handful a year out running around (but put out a bait anywhere and they come in by the herds smile )

Is it worth a shot?? They gotta be around.........

My buddy gets them in Wyoming just off 22, you can hunt Carlos Avery (? spelling) off 22 we thought about in years past but always got drawn. I've spoken to a warden with DNR and he said its certainly worth a try just because non quota doesn't always have to do with low population often due to closer to populated areas....so I was told.

Their are a few bears in the area, most are around the sunrise river.Start knocking on doors and asking especially around properties that border or are near the wild river state park. The biggest bear I have ever seen came into my bait in the area you are looking at.

Thanks for the help guys!

I went out and scouted a few places close to home and found some great habitat. The perfect combination of swamp, moving water, corn fields, oaks, blackberries, and thick stuff, all in close proximity.

I didn't see and tracks, scat, or scratches.....but I didn't cover a terrible amount of ground either.

If these spots were over in Wisconsin, I would be 100% confident they would hold bear. (Because it takes 6-8 years to draw a tag).

Hopefully there is a nice 75 pounder somewhere in there smile

Like Boar said, put out a test bait(gunny sack full of goodies hung off the ground works great) a couple hundred yards from the area you may hunt with a trail cam and see if there is any bear around.

B-man, we had pics of a 3-400 lb bear last year on our trail cameras in September in a small woods with cornfields on 2 sides just north of Forest lake and have seen them here in Columbus in the neighborhood. They are around so your efforts would be worth a try.
