I caught a 41 inch muskie on a topwater and it was one of those classic hits where you see the wake behind your lure.It was a great day

Craptacular.

Saturday, I had to due brakes on the tow vehicle, so I missed out fishing with RK up at Big Detroit.

Today, we hit Sugar lake. Should have figured that it was going to be a rough day at the lake when we got there. The south landing parking lot was full and rigs were parked on the gravel road on both sides leading to the landing.

Some of the *****s didn't pull far enough off the road to let real wide rigs go through. Saw a guy pulling a pontoon backing out down the road, couldn't get the rig through.

Anyways, we launched, I parked (my youngest daughter came along, she was flipping worms for bass) and away we went.

Raised a fish on the first spot, then we were cut off on every drift that we set up at all the other spots we tried. We were cut off by muskie fishers, walleye trollers, pontoons and wake boarders. I was pretty surprised by how close the muskie guys cut us off... so much for mutual respect.

Finally gave it up and went shallow for bass.

Reminded me all over why I hate Sugar.

Some days, it is ALOT more fun to say, "the hell with muskies" and fish for carp.

I was out on Mille Lacs this weekend. We had five lookers but no takers. We fished on the north end up by Wealthwood Saturday and Indian point/Wigwam Bay area today. We did see one guy catch a lower 40 inch fish but everyone else we talked to said they weren't having much luck.

Hooked 3 fish. Was able to boat one, 41.5". Had one around 38" up to the boat, and lost one little one about four pounds. We only had one other follow, she was a dandy, to bad that one didnt bite. We had a fun morning though. Buck tails, 3-12 fow.

It was a slow day for us, but at least the weather finaly turned out nice. I screwed up on the one fish we saw. It was a 40"+ fish and it flared up and charged at my lure near boat side. I let my instinct take over and set the hook before the fish even had the lure in its mouth. Guess thats what happens when you watch your lure for 4 hours with nothing following it, then all of the sudden out of nowhere here comes a big girl!

We saw two fish, caught one- 38.5". The really cool part is that it was my wife's first sklunge and her biggest fish ever by far.
Windy and tough to see fish for us.

Rain was way to much for me on Saturday as I been head plugged SICK.
Did find what I was look'en for though, to up my odds of starting the season off just right.
Sunday went on a boat ride with Bonnie and the hounds.
Pulled up to where I knew they would be, boated 6 Pike about 24" to tune up.
Tossing lures I repainted last week.
I then boated TWO (2) Musky 45" & 47", long and skinny, BIG heads.
Weird.
But fun.

Back home to Musky Acres here in Chisago City as Bonnie and I are getting married the 12th.

Keep on Rock'en!

Hiya,
Had a good opener... Got one on my 3rd cast, so got the ice breaker out of the way right off the bat. grin.gif Ended up with 3 others by the end of the day.

Sunday, I took my girls out fishing gills - got some big ones, and watching a hand-size gill take a 6 year old with an ultralight all over the place was a riot. Then cruised around and fish watched since it was calm, and the girls got a kick out of that. Saw all kinds of smallies guarding nests, couple schools of walleyes up in the cabbage, some HUGE buffalo, and an 8 lb or so walleye in about 4' of water (flat calm, 11 AM - what's up with that?)

Tom - Congrats on the wedding! Getting hitched myself on the 26th, then off to Canada muskie fishing for the honeymoon (her idea - swear to God...).

Cheers,
RK

Congrats Tom! I took the plunge on April 17 and it has been great.

Saturday we caught five muskies in in about 5 hours of fishing. The biggest was a fat 29" and the smallest was a skinny 27". They were all the same size, must have been last years stocking or something. The best part of the day was when I put on a Top Raider and had four attacks in five casts. Did manage to hook one on my second, but missed the rest. It had to be at least two different fish going after it. I would cast, let it sit 20 seconds, reel it in about half way, stop and let it sit about 10 seconds, start reeling and bam. My problem is I set the hook too soon when I see them hammer it like that I think. A little frusterating, but a lot of fun.

Got to the launch Saturday morning to find every parking spot full and even the parking spots that weren't spots were full. Turned around and spent the day walleye fishing instead. Tried getting out in the evening and the thunderheads rolled in just as we got to the launch, stratched that one too. So Saturday I got no Ski fishing in at all. Got up Sunday morning at 6:00 and hit the lake about 7:00, not as many people as Saturday but still a few. Ended up with a nice follow on a Viper Topwater a low to mid 40's fish, and that was it, no strikes and no lost fish.

I was just happy to get out...

Didn't get out til sunday morn. Went to Forest Lake about 6am. Met another ski guy out again. He brought up a few from weeds in about 9' of water the day before but not takers. I went to all the shallow sandy spots I could find and saw a 36" in 3 feet, 1 follow from her was all. Ran across a mid to upper 40"s girl sunning herself in about 18" of water. She took a closer look at a couple offerings but she wasn't hungry for steel apparently. Man the fog was nuts for about an hour I couldn't see anything.

We (my wife and I)managed to boat a 43" & a 51" early Sat. AM. After the weather got nice only 3 other lazy followers. Great weekend camping with some friends. Best opener ever. 47b4d826b3127ccebf80445ea6ab000000161047b4d826b3127ccebf81c36a47380000001610

Made the journey to Leech this year and it really paid off. Got a 53" on Sat. morning, and a 48" and 41" on Sun. What a beautiful weekend got really sun burnt. Very busy up there with the walleye yourney going on. Best opeaner for the last couple of years had many follows and caught the three. Fish were very hard to locate as there were very few weeds up yet.

Muskyman,

With Leech being known as a tough lake early in the year, you sure had an awesome weekend. And congrats on the 53"! What type of pattern did you establish to have that success?

As far as my report...probably my worst opener ever. Although I can't really say I fished that hard. I fished 3 different smaller lakes and raised two fish Saturday and two on Sunday. All fish were small, in the 30" to 35" range. Really struggled to get any action from pike too, which was unusual.

All we did was find the weeds. Threr were very few weeds, but if you found some there was most certanly at least one fish holding there. I think the key was fishing SLOW. The best lures were tiger tubes and reef hogs. We fished hard in Portage Bay, Kabekona Bay, Agency Narrows, and Battle Point. We also tried a lot of rocks with almost no sucess. I will be going back next month to try again.

Happy Hooking
Muskyman
