MN Moose Hunt

Has anybody out there been applying for the MN Moose Hunt? Or has anyone been successful in the lottery?

If so, how many years have you been applying of how many years did it take you?

We have a group of 4, and have been applying for 5 years now.

Our big get together is tommorow night, so it's time to talk strategies, have a couple barley pops, and figure out where to apply for this year!

I drew a license back in the 80's and then again in the 90's. They did not make it once in a lifetime until the 90's hence the two hunts. Both times I drew in BWCA. I think the odds of drawing are on the DNR HSOforum and you stand a better chance of drawing in the BWCA. It can be as tough a deal as you want to make it in the BWCA. In a lot of the zones you don't have to paddle back that far in to take a moose. However if you wish to go back 10 portages you certainly can and most likely would never see another hunter. Its tougher to draw out of the BWCA but a much easier hunt if you want as the majority of hunters succeed via road hunting.

I have been wondering if we really got what it takes to really do the BWCA hunt..

I guess what drives us is the idea that it IS only a once in a liftime hunt and what better place to do it.

Been there done that I was drawn in 2008 if I remember right it took 12 to 15 years before we were drawn but I had switched parties or added different people with lower points. I wish you luck and hope you get a tag before their is no season in this state. Just remember the fun stops once the shot is fired,it took me around 11 hours to quarter and pack the bull back to camp but I wouldn't change that for anything.

My dad and i drew a tag on our first year of applying. zone 24 Archerysniper is right...the work does start once you bang bang! Best advice i can give you...talk to guys that have done it. Get a list of their gear and make a list for yourself long before you ever draw a tag and if you are lucky enough to draw, see a bull, and harvest it.... make sure you don't shoot it in the water

If you are in even average shape right now, are willing to prepare this summer, and are stubborn enough to work through some (a lot of) pain if you shoot a moose, you have what it takes! Don't be scared away from hunting the BWCA! Like Arrow said, you don't need to paddle and portage way back into a lot of BWCA zones to get into moose. Anybody can paddle a moose across a lake, it's the portages that are killers, so if you can get into moose country with minimal portaging I would say just about anybody could do the hunt. Just be careful which BWCA zone you apply for. There are 2 or 3 where just getting to where the moose are is a challenge. If you have doubts, these may not be the zones for you. If you are confident you can do it, you will probably have an awesome hunt in an area all to yourself! Shoot me a message if you have any questions, I did a TON of research last year, and may have some info that could help you. I definitely have some contacts that you need to get ahold of that could help you choose a zone, and find an area within that zone if you get drawn!

30 years of admittently off and on applying, with different guys over the years, finally drew in 2010 and we got our bull. The game has changed now with a lot fewer liscenses available than there was in 2010 and before. Good luck to you guys, our hunt is a tremendous memory now.

Good luck to you, drawing the permit is the toughest part of the hunt. I hunted twice in this zone, most recently helped a friend haul a moose out of this zone in 2006. I have hunted both the west and east sides of it and can send you a detailed map of area from 2006 hunt should be lucky enough to draw. Only two small portages in.
