Charcoal Sale

Recommended Posts

When I learned about the petroleum byproducts used to make briquetes, I changed to natural hardwood and start it with a chimney and scrap newspaper.

What are your thoughts on this?

Does this mean you're using actual chunks of hardwood rather than briquettes labeled "natural hardwood"? Are you buying them somewhere or just drying and cutting your own so they fit in the chimney? I'm just wondering because I tried chipping hardwood to smoke with once and it didn't work nearly as well as the store-bought stuff.

I assumed he was talking about lump charcoal but I could be wrong.

Thanks Gentlemen! I will have to look into some of the alternatives fluids. By the way that is 3 5 lb tenderloins tied together. I'm looking to retire and move up to Ely myself.

Having grown up in Ely, I couldn't think of a finer spot to retire and cook tenderlions!!!! Good Luck....My Mom's house in town is for sale. If you are looking for a deal and easy access to everything, let me know!

If you're tasting fuel from either the briquets or lighter fluid, then you're not giving it enough time before throwing the meat on. Follow the directions on the bag, you need a good white ash covering ALL the charcoal.

Years ago I tried one of those charcoal lighter things where you use newspaper on the bottom, I wasn't impressed, too many times I'd come back and it hadn't started, then you're starting over and consequently running behind on your barbeque time. Plus I like lots of charcoal, more than what those things hold, nothing worse than too small of a fire, I can always 'choke down' too big of a fire.

Nowadays I use charcoal fluid, lots of it, I want it to burn hot and heavy for 15 minutes, then another 15+ minutes after I spread the coals, I generally plan on starting my grill about 45 minutes before I want to throw the beast on. Of course, as with any fire, the amount of wind you have makes a big difference!

I also saw that charcoal sale at Home Depot, sent the wife over to pick up six bags - and she came home with 8!!! My kind of woman!!

ya, that was a great deal!!!i wondered about the chimney also before i got mine. it has worked every time. yes it does take longer. for me it's very handy having a charr griller with the fire box attached. i can keep coals going with this in the firebox while maintaing a lower temp for baby backs and butts. especialy for butts which take longer time periods. your method works fine for you and that's what it's all about. i have done your method at times also and it worked just fine. just got used to the chimney and use it accordingly to what i prepare for the day. good luck.
