Volvo vs. Subaru?

Recommended Posts

We have a 2005 Freestyle AWD and my wife loves it. It gets good gas mileage and has been very reliable to drive.

Personally I believe a Subaru would be more reliable over the long run on average. Everyone that I know that has had one loves them for their dependability and AWD.

If you plan on doing your own maintenance or repairs than the subaru will be the better choice. Volos are not that hard to work on but some of the repairs are in really tight place along with the lack of easily accessible service information.

I just had a Volvo in the other day that the customer let a blown turbo seal go a little two long. Over 7 grand to make the necessary repairs!

Subaru tends to have a better reliability reputation, but do tend to have a problem now and then (just like everybody else does).

Volvo's are known for their safety, and are a little more of a premium vehicle. I believe their quality rep is middle of the road.

Never owned a Volvo, but we looked at them when making our "wagon" decision three years ago. Reliability and the cost of repairs did enter into our decision as well. Long story short, we ended up getting a Subaru Outback and cannot be more pleased with it. Have had absolutely no problems with it, average about 24mpg and it has a very smooth ride. Above all, my wife feels very safe in it, and it's a tank when it comes to snow and ice. Ours is a 2007. Some friends of ours have a 2010 with the new body style and absolutely love it.

As a owner of 2) Subies and over 150k driven between the 2 of them, I wouldn't hesitate to get another. Nothing out of line as far as repairs so far, and they have been comfortable, reliable, and easy to drive. I have an '06 Tribeca (70k) and an '01 Outback (170k), and bought them both about 3 years old as lease returns. The newer wagons are HUGE compared to the pre-'04 versions, but with the same 2.5 flat four so they might seem a bit anemic (especially with the CVT, which I would steer away from unless you want the higher mileage). I wish the flat six was more available in the outbacks, and they were a bitmore tow-friendly for a boat or small trailer, but the Volvos are no better in that department IMHO.

After the Outback is retired (if it ever dies!), I'll let my wife drive the Tribeca and I'd like to get a WRX hatch for funzies!

If your looking at new, buy a subaru outback. I don't know anyone that doesn't like theirs so far. The newer ones anyway. if older than 05'/06' then maybe volvo. consumer reports had some negative stuff for the older generation of the smaller subaru engines.

someone correct me if im wrong. I tend to like the new subaru's

I had an 06 Subaru Tribeca until last week. I loved that thing - unfortunately it just couldn't replace my Silverado crew cab. As previously stated no unreasonable repairs and everything I worked on was really easy and accessible. I can't speak to the Volvo side but I would not hesitate to buy the wife a subie if she wanted one.

Just purchased my 4th Subaru last Saturday so I'm definitely a believer in the Subies. The AWD is a huge selling point for me as well as the safety and reliability. Can't speak to the OP's question about reliability of Volvo's but it's been nothing but routine maintenance on all of my previous Subaru's.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
