How big of a boat lift

eelpout#1

Question

Moving to the lake and need a lift to park a Lund 1800 Explorer with 90 Yamaha 3 deep cycle batteries and fishing equipment on. Lund catalog says the 1825 Explorer weights 1450 and the Yamaha 90 is less than 400, so would it be safe to say that a used 3400 lb Newman boat lift should be able to get it out of the water safely?

Thanks for any constructive reply...

I'm in the market also. That's the smallest Newmans makes right? Do retailers deal on the price at all? One site I was on had a price list posted. They will have a booth at the Northwest Sports Show, might be able to work out a deal or get some extras! PM me if you want, Thank you!

I don't have a Newmans lift. However I will say that the most competitive pricing (best discounts) I have seen for docks and lifts always occurs at the December boat show in St. Paul. Not that you cannot get a good deal at the Sportshow etc. That boat show just seems to consistently offer top notch discounts.

IMO you would be wise to up-size. I had a lift that was perfectly OK except that I got a new boat. Bingo, drop big bucks on a new lift and go through a hassle to sell the used one (for not that great a price.) Check and see what a heavier lift would cost. I bet it won't be that much more. I bought mine from a dealer in Center City and got a decent price on it during the winter. My advice is to cast your eye wide and you may be able to find some better prices. It doesn't take that much to haul one down here.

What Tom7227 said. I've got one that I'm maxing out. Next boat will probably be bigger. Will need a bigger lift. Go big as budget allows or as big as your biggest future boat might be. good luck...

I would say a 3400 still leaves plenty of room to upgrade to a heavier boat. I guess it depends on the size of lake you are on as you might look silly with a bigger boat than what you have. The only thing to consider is if you would make the move to a glass boat. They are heavier. I have a 3000 lb lift for my Lund 1800 and I know I have room to go with a bigger boat.

Well, went and picked up my used 3400 lb Newman lift. Had to trailer it about 70 miles but paid what I think was a fair price, $1250. The lifts I have had to move before were all steel one and very heavy, this one slid on the trailer and off again real easily. Ice is still on the lake so I'll have to wait to slide her in. Hope there is enough water this spring to be able to use it. Thanks to all for the suggestions and comments!
