Waconia Muskies?

Recommended Posts

I have heard that Waconia contains some muskies. Is this true? I have never fished for muskies before and I was wondering what if anyone can recommend a few "starter" lures which might increase my chances of connection. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Black and orange Bucktails! Jackpots(Dark colors) Also try speed trolling crankbaits along the weeds. There are some nice fish in Waconia! Good luck! Keep us posted how you do!

I was out on waconia last night fishing for eyes, hey rainman, on the usual spot, and a 15 year old kid had a muskie on with his walleye tackle. the fish jumped and I took some interest in watching as the eyes were not biting. well it was him and his grandpa in the boat who appeared to be in his 70's. they had a SMALL net and were going to try and net it and soon they realized that the net would not work. after conversing with them for a bit while he was fighting the fish I told them they had to grab it by the gill plate and gently bring it in the boat. they looked at me like I was NUTZ. so I had the kid get in my boat so I could grab it for him. after about 45 minutes of fighting the fish I told the kid that we were getting close to the milfoil and if he wanted to get it he would have to horse it a bit. sure enough the big fish came up by the front of the boat and proceded to swim along side the boat all the way to the back. the whole time I was following the fish trying and praying that I could get my hand in his gills. But luck was not with me last night and the big ski would not let me get even a finger in her gill plate. she decided to dive down again and fight for another 15 minutes. she did get in the foil and with 6lb test the kid lost her. She was not a huge fish but she was a solid 45 inches. I felt like crying for the kid. he was ecstatic that he even had her on. anyway, long story to let people know there are skis in waconia but I thought someone out there might appreciate it.

I would start with a double trouble musky creature, An orange/black bionic bucktail, the largest redeye spoon you can find, a dark giant jackpot, and also a dark believer. I have had the best of luck with these lures.

As far as locations go, I won't give specifics, but you can't go wrong with Reinke's, in front of Nancy's or all around the island.

Good luck.

I had a big musky follow on sunday at Waconia. I was fishing for bass with 10lb test so its better it didn't strike though. All I'll say is that it was around deep rocks.

I was fishing Waconia Sunday and we were trolling. I had on a Storm deep Thunderstck in a walleye pattern. I was just trolling for whatever would bite. Suddenly the rod just about got jerked out of my hands. The next thing I know this Muskie goes airborn and throws the lure.... I don't know if it was legal size or not. I can't get that picture of that fish flying out of the water out of my head. I can't get hooked on muskie fishing. I can barely afford my hobbies now.

I popped a decent fish last Sunday during our all species tournament. Too bad she was a couple inches short of legal - I would have won the tourney with that fish + had big fish of the event! One other extremely sad note - she busted the gears in my Abu Garcia 5500 C3 when she grabbed my speed trolled spinnerbait.

My partner is yelling at me to "Reel it in, reel it in", and I'm yelling back "I can't, I can't"! So we were forced to hand land this 36-37 inch fish.

Waconia has got a lotta nice fish. Just gotta be persistent.
