Ice Fishing the MN River around Redwood Falls

waligators

Recommended Posts

I'm still fairly new to Redwood Falls and just wondering where are some good spots to try ice fishing the MN River. I saw some guys fishing the river north of town last weekend but still looking for other spots too. I know the walleye season is now closed but never to early to start thinking about next year! Any info would be appreciated or any other spots around Redwood also!

waligators, I have a possible opportunity to move to Redwood falls in the coming future. How do you like the area? PM me if you can so we might be able to have a further discussion if you are willing. Thanks Jeff.

waligators- I dont know so much about exact spots but I know theres some decent fish in there. Just gonna have to get out and try it trial and error style. Sorry I cant be of more help. You could try posting in the SW Minnesota page to get some more info.

jmd1- Redwood is a great town. Not too small not too big with decent job opportunities. I live in Olivia which is about 25 miles north of Redwood. Plenty of fishing opportunities on the river. I see your from Arizona so beware of the winters around here, except this winter crazy.

I spent 2 1/2 years in that town..... couldn't get me out of there fast enough and you'd have to pay me a fortune to even consider living anywhere near there again. There is a very dark cloud over that town!

Fishing opportunities are next to nothing. There's the dirty, polluted river and that's it! Other than that, you're driving close to an hour to fish small pothole lakes that probably suffer winter kills every couple years. Catfishing during the summer was somewhat entertaining and the river is a good fishery, however, I wouldn't even consider eating anything out of there. Hunting opportunities are abundant, so the fall season down there was okay.

Stuff your pockets with lots of rocks so the wind doesn't blow you away! wink

Good luck if you do live there..... different strokes for different folks!

Thanks for the info guys, i currently drive 54 miles one way and on a friday afternoon it can take me nearly 1.5 hrs. as far as the winter, i grew up in Sioux Falls and then near Omaha so I understand the winters. The wind well it blows here everyday only difference between here and there is the dust that is in it is like driving in a blizzard. One thing that you all are missing is the humid 115 degree days that we have here in the monsoon season. plus the fact that we have only a few lakes that are worth driving hours to, and when it is nearly 900 degrees who wants to stand on the shore anyway. I will keep you posted, it will be a great opportunity just have to put logistics in place. Jeff Oh my wife wants to know if there is a target anywhere near RWF

Since the moderators won't let me post what was actually said when I told her, and then i read that it was not even a super walmart she used some words that are reserved for only those friends you don't ever want to see again. Oh well she will have to get out of the big city way and into the little town lifestyle.

Another thing you may want to run past your wife.... there are NO restuarants in Redwood, aside from a Country Kitchen, a horrid Asian restuarant and a dive that should really just be condemned. But there is just about every fast food joint you could want..... hence the reason I feel RWF holds possibly the highest obesity rate/capita in the state.

I really couldn't believe that there wasn't one good old mom and pop greasy spoon in that town.

If you do move to that area, you really should consider living in one of the nearbye bigger towns and commuting to Deadwood for work. Willmar, Marshall or New Ulm would be much better, IMO.

O good old redwood I grew up there its really not that bad you are miles away from any shopping and lakes, there is / was a great county park there 15 yrs ago, uncle lives there and he doesn't mind it. Good luck in your move

Theres still the county park there dan. Good place to go for a hike and I have heard that the golf course is decent. And come to think of it, there are no real restaurants in Redwood. I never noticed that before, but the restaurant and buffet at Jackpot arent bad.

I dont live in town, but work here.

There's a good restaurant in North Redwood down the hill. Used to be the Valley. new owners recently. Now called the Rusty Bucket. good food. look em up online.

Redwood isnt all that bad. you drive to fish though. hunting is good in the fall. target is 45 minutes up the road in willmar.

and the walmart is getting added on to as we type. full grocery. So things are really looking up. we might get a Kmart any day now, or a even pamida!!!!

What is pamida? I grew up in a town of 1200 folks in Nebraska but coming to RWF from Phoenix might be interesting. I can handle it but my wife might not as much. I drive an hour now so a 30 minute commute would not be bad. i will be interested to see what else people have to say, if nothing else it is good for a laugh. Thanks again guys.

I second Willmar! About 40-50 miles north of Redwood. I grew up around RWF and my family still lives there. Willmar is just the right size (20,000 people). 20 lakes within a 20 min drive, a Target, a Super Wal-Mart, a college here in town, and many businesses starting up.

Pamida is kinda like the ghetto version of walmart judging by the ones I have been in. I thought Pamida went outta business? The one in Glencoe and I think the one in Litchfield have been closed for a couple years now.

The only thing I absolutely hate about Willmar is that NO ONE can drive. I see plenty of people go halfway across the road and wait for a car to go by then go the rest of the way. Too many people yakin on their phone not paying attention to anything when they shouldnt be driving in the first place. I know that all comes with a bigger town but to me it seems like its worse in Willmar than anywhere else.

Thats why I moved to Olivia, population 1500 give or take. Everybody pretty much knows everybody, dont need to worry about where the kids are, people actually drive normally and you dont constantly hear sirens. Best part is, half hour north to fish and a half hour south to hunt, best of both worlds.

Thats just my 2 cents.

ahh Redwood Falls isn't all that bad...someone seems a little anti-Redwood but it is definatly liveable. As far as hunting, lots of public land and getting more all the time. Fishing...no fishing here, gotta go north, the river is bad news grin There are places to eat, they are opening up a mexican place in a few weeks I have been told, there is a Pizza Ranch, Pizza Hut, Chumbleys Burger and Brew, Country Kitchen, Jackpot Restaurant and Buffet, Morgans Deli, Tersteegs Deli, Rusty Bucket, China Royal, Dari King, Dari Queen, golden arches, Burger King...am I forgeting any? Oh and in Morton there is a Mexican Cafe and the Pub which is my favorite. If you want any more info let me know, there are good points and bad but overall "I" don't think that the bad outweighs the good!

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
    • Chef boyardee pizza from the box!
