Jake Decoys

Last year I bought a Jake decoy and well I've never used them before usually I just throw out a hen decoy or two, but I was wondering whats the best way to set up using a Jake decoy? I wanna try it out this year because I've only heard positive things from people that use them when they hunt.

I like to put out a hen decoy as close to the ground as possible...almost like a submissive position then have the jake standing over her ( not directly but slightly off to the side) then another hen if you have it several feet away standing in a normal up right or a feeding positions...this way the standing hen gives an easily seen target for the big tom and the jake over hen setup challenges his manhood.

just one more question, do you make any Jake calls when you are calling?

You certainly can try that. You never know from day to day what calls will be the one to bring the longbeards in.

I typically set two hens, at 90 degrees to each other so a distance Tom can get a profile view from most angles. Then I set a Jake outside of my hens, facing me and the hens. I like some motion, but I don't like them to spin on the stake. Sticks are good for this. I like the Jake facing me so the Tom comes between the Jake and the hens.

I've heard all kinds of ways to set up, but this one works for me if I have the jump on the Tom. Quick sets are a single hen if i don't have time. I would much rather spend 30 seconds getting comfortable than worry about a decoy.

I am with FishingFool and my decoy sets. I don't always use decoys, but this setup has gotten me 2 birds for sure. One hammered my Jake decoy before I shot him and the other bird was well on his way, but I shot him first. Seems the Jake with a couple hens can really [PoorWordUsage] them off.

Just listen to the gobbles he will tell you which sound and call he likes the best. You can really never set your decoys to close either I normally go around 8 yards.

2 things to keep in mind here: 1) approaching Toms will be focused on the decoys and if you have them set too close then he/they will likely spot any movement you make and 2) any other hunters that try to sneak up on your decoys and take a shot may shoot you. I like to place my decoys at about half my effective kill range which means 20-25 yards and I like using a Jake and hen. I place the hen and I face them both in the same direction and usually towards me. Why? Because turkeys traveling together usually face the same direction. smile

I agree with Shane on how far to set your decoys out. If you have them at 8-10 yards and are shotgunning you better not flinch at all or you have a very good chance of missing as your pattern is pretty small at that range with any kind of turkey choke. I usually step off 22 yards and set the decoys. Just depends on how your gun patterns. Archery guys I would guess probably want them somewhat closer.

Well I do all of my turkey hunting with the bow I haven't carried a gun for at least 12 years now. All my sets normally are with my blind in the middle of the field where the birds frequent through out the day so any hunter sneaking in is blind. I took my bird 2 years ago at 43 yards all the other birds have been 15 yards or closer three without the blind two at 8 yards and the other at 5 yards those were a rush. I should have clarified better, put your decoy at 8 yards but don't sit directly in line with them if you are not using a blind but keep them close.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
