Dog stopped eating her food?

Is she still doing her business when you walk her? At 12, I wouldn't take any chances. I'd take her to the vet. Could be some sort of intestinal blockage. The treats and scraps may be too much for her to resist, but suddenly refusing to eat her regular meal is an indication of something wrong.

speaking from my own experience, i had a large dog that passed at age 15. similiar symptoms happened to this dog. it turned out to be a twisted stomach. dont know the proper term for it. i was told this was somewhat common in large breed dogs. may not be the case with your dog. good luck.

The twisted stomach is called torsion I believe and can be common in many larger breeds including most hunting dogs.

If the dog seems normal in every other way including energy level, no signs of pain or discomfort, and still eating table scraps and treats then I'd tend to think its not torsion, but you never know.

A trip to the vet is probably a good idea to get it figured out for sure.

Did the dog stop eating all of a sudden or did she pick at the food a little and lose interest? My dog will go through phases when he doesn't really eat all that much. He'll never go an entire day without eating at all but he'll opt to skip his dinner or breakfast now and then, or only eat some of it.

Is there anything different with the food? Is it old? Is the bowl dirty? She may be smelling something unappealing in the bowl when she goes to eat.

If she's doing her business like normal its probably something other than a blockage but at that age there are a lot of ailments that may be setting in that affect appetite. If she's not doing her business its likely something more like a blockage. A vet visit is a good idea either way.

If they can't find anything wrong with her trying mixing in some pumpkin puree in with the kibble. Get a can of just plain pumpkin (no added spices or sugar) like you'd use for pumpkin pie and put a 1/4 can with her food. Dogs seem to love it and its actually supposed to be really good for their digestion.

Took her to the vet and he thought she had some intestinal blockage. He also ran a organ test and her kidneys were elevated. Put her on antibiotics and i was giving her enemas twice a day. She went down hill fast. I had made the appt to put her down monday at 4:00 but she did not make until then. She died in her favorite spot to sleep in the house monday morning at 10:30. It has been a rough couple days for the wife and my 3 young boys. I hunted her hard for many years and will be difficult to replace her but I do have birds mounted, wood duck, hen and drake mallard and pheasant that she had retrieved. All really special retrieves to me and her.

Sorry to hear that MTguy... One of the toughest things we go through as family is saying good bye to our dogs. keep those thoughts alive of all the great times and soon you will have a new pal walking by your side.

Good Luck!

yeah she was my first dog... read a lot of books and trained her myself. This was before kids. got her at the beginning of summer and worked with her everyday 20-30 minutes 2-3 times a day during the summer. so we had a special bond. She was my truly my dog.

So sorry to hear about your dog.. I lost my 6 year old yellow lab in similar fashion about 3 weeks ago. I believe mine may have been the result of tainted dog food. The reason I say that is because I have heard of 3 other dogs in my area that also passed and were also eating the same food. I have sent a sample in to DelMonte foods to have it tested. Waiting to hear back.

Sorry about the loss of your lab...it's tough, they really are a man's best friend (dogs in general) I have a 2 year old (April) yellow lab and we've got our thing together going on. Memories will last for a lifetime. Hope things will heal as time goes by.

Dillrodd- any chances it was IAMs large breed dog food? Let us know on the test results.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
