99 f150 ignition problems?

so i was leaving school yesterday and i go to start it and i get it to run and the key looses all resistance and does not shut the truck off or allow me to get it to start it as im driving i can turn the key back and take it out and keep right on going.. what could cause this?

Pull the ignition lock cylinder. The nub on the end has probably broken off.

There is a small hole under the tumbler, poke a pick in it, and you can slide the tumbler out. You will need to get a new tumbler for it though.

I would add that it needs to be in the "run" position in order to get it out while pushing in with the pick.

SAounded like it is stuck in the run position.

shes stuck in the run position alright haha! so what do i need to remove to fix it? the shroud around the steeering wheel?

yes remove the cover, take a pick and push the tumbler out. Key will stay with it usually. If the end is broken off you may have to dig the old piece out. Not hard to do, but you will need to replace it in order to start the truck again.

You shouldnt need to remove anything, there is a hole on the bottom side of the shroud, about an 1/8" round, stick a pick in there and and pull the tumbler out. Bring it to a dealer, and they will rekey you a new tumbler with your old key, so it matches your doors.

This is a picture of the bottom side of the steering column.

#1, the key and cylinder around it, can be removed, by installing a small pick, or screw driver into #2. Then you can bring the key, and cylinder to a dealer, and they will set up a new cylinder to your old key. This way your doors will work on the same key, and if you have a pats security system, you wont have to reprogram the keys.

ford wanter an arm and a leg to get a new tumbler.. so i went to napa and picked one up still had to go to the dealer ship to get it re programmed but it was a $120 bucks less..

took it to the dealer to get the key re programmed.. they spent 2 hours trying to get it to accept the key.. is ther any way to by pass the patts system?? like have a switch under the dash so if i park it in a sketchy place i can just hit the switch so nothing workes?
