I like topwater too. Top Raiders The Doc Creepers. But I also like big cranks.Has anyone tryed the new Zalt and Zam lures from North American distribution. They are hot. You cant fish them wrong. They are kinda hard to get but well worth trying. And few people have them.

Scoot, I just got a couple of super top raiders last year. Only had a chance to throw them a couple of times, and haven't been bit yet. They look pretty good in the water, but I think I still prefer the sound of a original topraider... Time will tell I guess.

Super Topraiders did well in the chop for me.
I only have one left as I gave one away to a kid during the Muskie Tourney and two to clients that just had to have them?

Guess I'm just top nice that way.

All of you sound like almost every cast you get a follow or a fish. I am new to muskie fishing and was wondering if it really is that easy for some of you. If it is,i could use some help, if not, i get it that you guys like to make it sound that way.

I used a super topraider and a black and silver bucktail almost exclusivly last year and out of the 26 muskies I caught, 10 were on the topraider, in many different conditions. It is a great lure to use and so exciting when they slam it. It is a lure that I would recommend to anyone.

Hey
all that has been suggested is great. If you are like me and like to save a little money, here is a tip. No matter what conditions when retrieving a bucktail, I will speed up the retrieve enough for the blades to plop out and churn the surface a little. the speed change and surface action will trigger the sklunge to hit, they think it is getin aways from them. think of all the muskies you have had hit or almost run into the boat when the bucktail is approaching the surface. Once every three casts I will do this. tight lines.

MuskieBoy,
Absolutely not. Somedays on the water it can be absolutely perfect-but that is a rare moment when you stick 3, 4, 5 fish in a day. Does anyone else tinker with the jackpot at all. There was a thread on muskiefirst on jackpots. After reading that, I won't throw a jackpot that hasn't had the hooks hangers epoxied in. I also move the front hook back an inch and t the hooks.

You guys were talking about looking for a black Top Raider. I found a NEW model that just came out called the "Black Widow". I've never seen it before and there was a sign that said it was a new design. Of course, I bought it. smile.gif
It's almost entirely black except for a small spot of dark red on the belly and a little dark red on the blade. Other than that, ALL BLACK! Looks like it might do the job. Fleet in Fergus Falls is where I found it.

There is a new idea going through the "chat boards" about having to T your hooks on some of the bigger baits. This means that you take the treble hooks, and the two points that would rest on the belly of the lure, get bent down and out, so if you hold the bottom hook, the other two hooks come out as a T rather than the Y shape they started as. The feeling is that the T will expose more of the point, and increase your hooking percentage.

Just one more way some like to up their odds.

Good Luck!
Steve

MN Jackpot,
I have used the Doc with some luck. I've only caught 3 muskies so far, but I just started last fall. One of the 3 came on a black Doc at Lake Harriet. I have had multiple strikes on this bait, but not a lot of hookups, but I've been told that is common with topwater baits.

sauggydoggy,Topwater baits can really mess with your reflexes. Naturally when we see a fish strike/splash/or do anything that makes those little hairs on the back of your neck stand up we want to set the hook instantly, pulling it away from the fish. frown.gif Wait for the tug, then hook'em up. It took me along time and alot of cursing to get that through my head. smile.gif

I feel that prop stle topwater lures give you the best hooking percentage. I also fell that prop baits where the prop is in the front of the lure will also help improve hooking percentage.

The Topwalker and the Thuderhead are my 2 favorites...

My 2 cents....

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
